Clean Shores Mumbai - Greenesha 2018

The Ganesha festival culminates at the seashore with the immersion of the idols in the sea along with all the offerings made to Ganesha during the festival. Therefore, as part of our Clean Shores Mumbai campaign, supported by Coca Cola India, UWM adopted five prominent Ganesh Mandals in the neighbourhoods of the beaches in Dadar and Mahim to promote an eco-friendly celebration.

12,800+ devotees and local citizens were sensitized over a 10-day long campaign, through awareness drives conducted by 89 youth volunteers from four colleges in Dadar who were trained by United Way Mumbai. The citizens were educated about the importance of a pollution-free celebration of the Ganesha festival. 15 awareness drives, 15 street play performances were organized at the adopted pandals, where 5000 sets of cloth bags and eco-friendly bowls were provisioned for distribution among the devotees. All pandals were also encouraged to segregate and safely dispose of the waste generated through sets of three colour-coded bins given to each of the pandals. More than 15 tonnes of Nirmalya (floral offerings) was collected through the Ganesh Mandals and over 400 volunteers from city colleges and corporates collected over 4.5 tonnes of Nirmalya during the clean-up drives at beaches in Dadar.
