Hello, I'm Lavina Chainani, and I've worked for over 10 years at the Jai Vakeel Foundation (JVF), an NGO serving individuals with intellectual disabilities.
I fell in Love with Jai Vakeel Foundation from the very 1st day that I stepped into the premises for my job interview and at that very moment, I decided that I want to work here.
What keeps me motivated to stay at work everyday? Each time I step onto campus, I witness the resilience and unwavering positivity of our children has taught me the importance of embracing happiness despite life's challenges.
Individuals with Intellectual disability (ID) have an IQ of 70 or below. It is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by significantly impaired intellectual functioning (such as learning, problem solving, judgment) as well as adaptive functioning (activities of daily life such as communication and independent living)
*1 in every 50 that is 28 million individuals in India have an ID. In spite of this huge number, they are stigmatized, are considered less deserving and in many parts of India, ID is still considered to be the result of divine justice or punishment for sins committed in past lives and they continue to be neglected and not included in society.
