The Katkari community, classified as one of India's 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), faces multiple challenges. At the heart of their challenges lies the pressing issue of limited access to education, which has far reaching consequences for their social and economic well-being. The nomadic lifestyle embraced by the Katkari and the absence of proper educational infrastructure within their settlements impedes their children’s educational journey. As a result, Katkari youth experience alarmingly high dropout rates and are deprived of essential opportunities for academic growth. This educational disadvantage continues the cycle of poverty, limiting their chances for economic advancement. To address the above complex challenges, in 1995, PRIDE India took a bold step forward by initiating 'JeevanShala,'. This project serves as a nurturing and secure residential facility, providing a safe haven for children while their parents engage in livelihood activities. But it goes far beyond mere shelter – 'JeevanShala' offers a diverse range of services and activities that empower these children and nurture their overall well-being. Additionally 'JeevanShala' is aligned with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), ensuring that every child's rights to education, development, and protection are upheld.
