At a time where people were killing these strays because of the 'menace' they created, WSD stepped in to try & create a space where we could co-habitate peacefully. They converted a BMC kill shelter to the shelter that is now a safe abode for these strays.
Their shelter at Mahalaxmi houses abandoned dogs that are put up for adoption once again. Sick animals are also treated here. There are two sections of the kennel dedicated for the airport dogs. These dogs are from the airport runway that were going to be killed, so they were brought to the shelter by WSD, where they now reside. They also have a vaccination and sterilization program where they bring in dogs from the streets. They sterilize & vaccinate them, allow them a few days for recuperation & then put them back where they were got from. This helps keep the stray population in check & also keeps diseases at bay.
They also have First- Aid program run by Volunteers who go around the streets of South Bombay, treating dogs on the spot and & checking up on old cases.
To do things on such a large scale, they require funds & that's where you come in! You can donate whatever amount you like to help our furry friends & hopefully give them a better life, something they wholeheartedly deserve. If you can't donate at the moment, you can still do your bit by volunteering, helping out or just coming by & playing with them.
They love pets, attention & treats! A familiar face & some love would go a long, long way.
