The marginalized communities constitute a large proportion of agricultural laborers, casual laborers, plantation/ industrial laborers etc. They belong to the poorest strata of the society with erratic livelihood opportunities and unstable income which results to poverty, low education levels, unhealthy living conditions etc. Multidimensional nature of poverty attacking various fronts of mankind opens a broader spectrum for Goonj to address this ongoing challenge and design community led interventions for their betterment.
Turn material into a motivator and resource to empower communities to resolve their developmental issues while upholding the dignity and self-respect of the people involved. Extending simple solutions around water- that improves agriculture, improved sanitation impacts community health positively, a road repaired/ made results in increased accessibility to markets, healthcare, schools etc.
Cloth for Work (earlier known as Dignity for Work), Goonj's flagship initiative, dignifies receiving while putting the decision making (about what issues to work on) in the hands of rural communities, giving them a sense of empowerment in solving their own problems. Instead of donor, beneficiaries, everyone is a stakeholder. The work is about holistically and locally addressing the difficult rural problems with the participation of rural communities, their efforts, wisdom and resources. Family kits are rewarded to people for their hard work and freeing up their meager resources for other urgent needs.
