Apne Aap Women’s Collective (AAWC) is an anti-human trafficking organization established in 1998 which serves the women in brothel-based prostitution and their daughters in Falkland Road, Kamathipura and Turbhe Stores- the red light area of Mumbai.
The vision of the organization is to provide the tools and resources for empowerment of trafficked brothel-based prostitutes, their daughters, and other marginalized girls in Mumbai’s and Navi Mumbai’s red-light district, to prevent the cycle of intergenerational prostitution. To achieve this vision, the mission is to provide a caring and supportive platform of wholesome services to help women and girls in the red light area make choices for a dignified and better quality of life.

Appeal

We appeal for your support to help us empower women from red-light areas and break the cycle of intergenerational prostitution amongst their daughters.
Funds raised will go towards our core programs that provide education, healthcare, nutrition, shelter, vocational training, and documentation. Umeed enables the transformative journey of women trafficked into brothel-based prostitution to lead dignified lives. Udaan empowers their daughters through education and career guidance to prevent them from being pulled into the same cycle.

Project DescriptionUdaan is our program dedicated to breaking the cycle of intergenerational prostitution, a serious threat to the daughters of women in brothel-based prostitution. We offer comprehensive support, including healthcare, nutrition, shelter, counselling, and education, to help these girls integrate into mainstream society and secure a dignified future. The funds supported us in our daily operations of the program. Key activities include comprehensive healthcare services, such as regular check-ups, nutritional support, medical referrals and health camps. We also organised several educational activities, including after-school tuition, educational games, internal tests, stationery arrangements and career guidance workshops. Additionally, we provided vocational and skill-building classes to prepare the girls for a successful future. Psychological counselling and recreational activities were also conducted to promote holistic development.

Beneficiary DescriptionThe Udaan program serves girls aged 5 to 18 years from Mumbai’s red-light district. In FY 2024-25, the program benefited a total of 148 girls.
ImpactThe Udaan program has made significant strides in empowering young girls from Mumbai’s Red Light District. By providing comprehensive healthcare, educational support, vocational training, and psychological counselling, we have observed remarkable improvements in the girls’ self-confidence, academic performance, and overall well-being.

This year, we served a total of 148 beneficiaries and enrolled 51 new girls into the program. Our dedicated outreach team conducted a total of 1,336 visits within the community to deliver various services and keep the mothers updated on the girls' progress. Education, being a cornerstone of the program, saw a total of 3476 educational activities conducted. These activities have enhanced academic engagement and performance among the girls. Additionally, all 148 beneficiaries received consistent nutritional support. Beneficiaries showed noticeable improvements in health, with regular monitoring of height and weight offering valuable insights into their development. Continued medical care and proper nutrition led to a visible decline in common illnesses.

These efforts reflect our commitment to enhancing the lives of these young girls, breaking the cycle of intergenerational prostitution, and paving the way for a brighter, more empowered future.

ImpactThe Udaan program has made significant strides in empowering young girls from Mumbai’s Red Light District. By providing comprehensive healthcare, educational support, vocational training, and psychological counselling, we have seen notable improvements in the girls’ self-confidence, academic performance, and overall well-being.

This year, we served 115 beneficiaries, welcoming 19 new girls into the program. Our outreach team conducted 1,053 community visits, ensuring effective service delivery and fostering trust within the community.

Education remains a cornerstone of our program, with 1,043 educational activities implemented. These activities have enhanced academic engagement and performance among the girls.

In healthcare, we organized 7 medical camps, offering vital health services and screenings. We also conducted 78 individual counseling sessions for mental health support and performed 27 height and weight check-ups to monitor physical growth. Additionally, all beneficiaries received consistent nutritional support, contributing to better health, increased energy, and improved focus in their educational and vocational pursuits.

These efforts reflect our commitment to transforming lives, breaking the cycle of intergenerational prostitution, and fostering self-reliance and empowerment for a brighter future.

Project DescriptionUmeed for women in brothel-based prostitution: The objectives of the Umeed Program are to help women who have been trafficked into prostitution with their physical, mental and economic well-being. Umeed is a constant empowerment program, which aims at a holistic and overall development of the beneficiaries through services such as outreach- the outreach team helps identify potential beneficiaries, conducts field visits, provide aid in obtaining identity documents (Voter Card, Ration Card, PAN Card, Aadhar card) which enable them an access to government benefits and schemes. Finance/ financial literacy, education/ adult literacy empowerment/ vocational training, health- mental & physical such as medical referrals, medical monthly check up/ health camps/ nutrition, counselling, recreation and shelter home placement. Since these women enter prostitution at a very young age, they are uneducated and unskilled, which makes such an empowerment process imperative.

Beneficiary DescriptionWith the help of this generous donation, we were able to support the nutritional and ration requirements of about 20 women beneficiaries across our three centres: Kamathipura, Falkland Road, and Turbhe.
ImpactUmeed women receive daily medical referral and attendant help for govt clinics and hospitals, first aid, quarterly medical camps (general health, dental, vision, malaria, cancer detection) and regular health workshops (hygiene, nutrition, reproductive health, maternal/child health). Women living with HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis receive daily nutritional supplements; ration, those who need long-term treatment or hospital care are provided subsidized medication and/or hospital referrals.
