The Tata Mumbai Marathon holds its prestigious reputation among the top 10 marathons in the world. It is not only a platform to test an individual’s sporting excellence but also one of the best fundraising platforms for participating charities.
Over the years, the Tata Mumbai Marathon has assumed a stature of eminence as the largest philanthropic sporting platform in Asia. Each year, more than 270 NGOs participate in the event to raise funds for the work they do. Corporates and individuals use the platform as a way to give back to society and the less privileged. Philanthropy through the platform is well regulated, hence serves as an assurance to prospective donors.
Since its inception, the event has raised more than INR 271 crores benefiting over 589 charities, with funds being used for causes ranging from arts, culture and sports to education, environment, health, human rights and others, making the platform truly cause agnostic. The 2019 edition itself saw INR 40.70 crores being raised, shattering all previous records.
As the official philanthropy partner of the event, United Way Mumbai (UWM) enables the participating charities to raise funds by maintaining a cause neutral platform. All funds raised through the TMM are channelized through UWM, which is responsible for accounting and providing tax exemption receipts to all donors.
There are three ways through which you can participate in the event.
a) Through Open Category: To participate through the open category, you will have to qualify as per the criteria mentioned here: https://www.procam.in/tatamumbaimarathon/ and register by the dates mentioned here: https://www.procam.in/tatamumbaimarathon/important-dates. If you require any further assistance or have queries, please contact the event promoter – Procam International Pvt. Ltd. at 022 4202 0200 or email them at tatamumbaimarathon@procam.in.
b) Through Charity: To participate through charity, you are required to select one of the registered NGOs from the list mentioned here: http://unitedwaymumbai.org/tmm-participating-charities.htm and contact them to understand the donation amount and application process. You can search for a specific NGO either by name or through cause category in the drop-down menu. Each of the registered NGOs is allotted a certain number of running slots/places (bibs) at the TMM of various race categories and given a chance to raise funds for their projects. The contact details of the NGO and number of available running slots are mentioned on their page.
c) Through Fundraising: Individuals who are passionate about contributing to various social causes are invited to raise funds through the TMM fundraising platform. Upon reaching a certain fundraising level, you will be eligible to avail a bib either for yourself or for someone you know, based on the criteria mentioned here: <insert link for fundraising privileges>.
United Way Mumbai aims to partner with as many NGOs as possible from various cause categories to provide you with a diverse list to select from. All the registered NGOs are listed here: https://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/tmm-participating-charities.htm.
You can search for a specific NGO either by name or through cause category in the drop-down menu. The list is updated as soon as the verification process is complete at our end.
You can request the NGO of your choice to fill the preliminary registration form here to register with UWM for the TMM. If the NGO fulfils the conditions for statutory and financial due diligence of UWM, they may complete their registration for the TMM. Post which you may select the NGO to support.
UWM will assist you in the process of shortlisting a set of NGOs from the ones registered with us that closely match your interests. The NGO that you shortlist must be from among those that are registered with us for the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2020.
Below mentioned are the key features of the TMM 2020 philanthropic platform:
In order to participate, click here, fill the form and submit the details to UWM for further consideration. UWM will verify the details submitted by you and provide your unique Login ID & Password(which you can change after login). Post which follow the steps mentioned below:
Please note that registration with United Way Mumbai, the Official Philanthropy Partner, as a "Listed NGO" for the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2020 is subject to submission of the above mentioned form and cheque, validation and confirmation of the uploaded documents, and realization of payment of INR 2,000 as annual registration charges.
NGOs who fulfil the requirement of the documents as mentioned here are eligible to register for the TMM 2020. After receiving the registration request, United Way Mumbai conducts a due diligence of the NGOs. After the verification process is complete, the registered NGOs are listed here.
Yes, all NGOs registered in India can register for the event.
No, NGOs not registered in India cannot register for the event.
United Way Mumbai features all the registered NGOs for the event on its website non preferentially. TMM is a time when hundreds of individuals, corporates and donors visit the UWM website daily, as they look for causes and NGOs to support. Being featured on the website is the best way to reach out to these prospective donors, and raise the maximum possible funds through this platform.
All participating NGOs that have registered before 23rd October 2019 are eligible to request up to 10 charity bibs.
The Top 70 NGOs in the Charity Bib Ranking list are eligible for higher allocation of Charity Bibs, however, only 10 bibs will be allocated at a time. Upon submission of all the previously allocated 10 bibs, the next set of 10 will be allocated for further utilization. For more details, please refer to page no. 10 & 11 of the Philanthropy Structure.
The allocated bibs can be used for Full / Half / Open 10K – Timed Race Categories (TRC). To maintain a level playing field, a minimum donation of INR 10,000 is mandatory per bib in order for it to be accepted by UWM. We insist NGOs to use the charity bibs to maximize their fundraising potential. A charity bib average of above INR 12000 make the NGO eligible for one privilege point and the utilization of at least 5 charity bibs earns a further point.
All NGOs are eligible to request for DR / SCR / CWD – Untimed Race Categories (URC) bibs and these would be allocated after the closure of corporate team registration (30th Sep, 2019). Allocation of the same will be done on first come first served basis (up to 20 at a time) until they are available. The minimum donation to be raised per URC bib is INR 5000 till 10thNovember 2019, post which it will increase to INR 10,000. These bibs cannot be returned or converted or used for any other race category and will be allocated only on request. Once allocated, these bibs cannot be returned, unutilized bib would be considered forfeited, and INR 1000 per unutilized bib will be deducted from the total funds raised by the NGO.
Note:
Yes, you can. Multiple Dream Rub bibs can be clubbed and a group can be created by an NGO. While submitting the bibs, the NGO will have to select the Dream Run Group on their bib manager, and submit the bib summary sheet with the donation amount to UWM.
Bibs can be allotted in 2nd round only if the previously allocated bibs have been fully utilized and submitted by the NGO to UWM.
Bibs that are neither returned or utilized by Wednesday 23rd October 2019 will be considered forfeited and a deduction of INR 1,000 per unutilized bib will be applied from amount (if any) raised by the NGO.
NGOs must return the unutilized bibs to UWM by emailing the bib numbers to bibs@unitedwaymumbai.org by the said date.
NGOs can choose to block fewer bibs initially and request for their remaining bibs by 23rd October, 2019 to ensure avoiding bib forfeiture.
To understand the TMM 2020 charity bib submission process in detail, kindly refer to page no. 12 of the TMM 2020 Philanthropy Structure.
Once the NGO has submitted all of their Dream Run Group bibs, a race fee cheque in favour of ‘Procam International Pvt.Ltd.’, (format of which is available on https://www.procam.in/tatamumbaimarathon/race-categories/dream-run/how-to-apply), will have to be submitted to UWM. After UWM receives the required documents, NGOs will receive a unique Group registration voucher code and link.
Yes, NGOs can pay the runner race fees.
The NGO can pay the race fee offline by submitting a cheque of race fee in favour of ‘Procam International Pvt. Ltd.’ to UWM with the UWM Bib ID written on the back of the cheque along with the bib summary sheet. NGOs will then receive a Prepaid Voucher code and a unique link for runner registration. In case, the cheque is not honored, the bib will not be issued to the runner.
NGO can also choose to pay the race fee online through the Postpaid voucher code. Once the donation towards the bib is processed, the NGO will receive a Postpaid Voucher code and unique link for runner registration. In this case, NGO will have to fill the runner registration online form on behalf of their runner and pay the race fee using their debit/ credit card/ net banking.
Post charity bibs submission on 20th November, if any bibs from the charity quota remain unutilized, they will be made available to NGOs for runners to avail at a premium donation. Allocation of the same will be done on a first-come-first-served basis until they are available. The minimum donation amount for premium bibs would be declared at a later date.
The charity bib donation cheque should be in favour of ‘United Way of Mumbai’.
No, all funds collected through the TMM 2020 will have to be routed through UWM, the official philanthropy partner. All cheques/ DDs/ bank transfers and online donations will thereafter be transferred to the NGO(s) of the participant's choice.
No, all bib-related donations must be made through cheque / DD or through specific donation link as shared by the NGO based on the agreed donation amount. Donations made directly on the NGO page on UWM website will be considered as a direct donation and will not be refunded once made.
Once the donation cheque is obtained from the donor -
Offline process:
Online process:
UWM retains INR 250 per bib, irrespective of the amount raised per bib.
An additional 3% of the donation amount is deducted to defray payment gateway charges only in case of bibs availed through an online payment mode on UWM website.
The race fee is a separate component which is charged based on the actual number of individual participants in the event. The same cannot be considered as a part of the donation made by you as it is a cost against a service provided by the event promoter; in this case, the bib and other arrangements made for an individual to participate in the race. Therefore, it is charged separately by the event promoter – Procam International Pvt. Ltd. at the time of registration on a separate website.
Once the donation cheques are cleared or donation has been made online, UWM will provide voucher codes to the NGOs with the website link for runner registration. The NGO is required to share the same with the runner and help in completing the registration process. The voucher code can only be used once and will have to be used before 15th December 2019. To complete the registration, the runner will have to pay the applicable race fee. Once applied, a change of name is not permissible.
Note:
Most of the time, the runner himself/ herself will find a trainer. The NGOs can also help in finding a trainer. This has to be worked out with the runner(s).
In order to incentivize the efforts of those participating NGOs who fully leverage the platform provided by the TMM, a list of 15 indicators have been identified, which translate into points for the NGO. The points determine the privilege level of the NGO at the TMM 2020. Kindly refer to page no. 8 & 9 of the TMM 2020 Philanthropy Structure for an in-depth understanding of the same.
Note:
Please watch the NGO privilege level AV here to get an in-depth understanding of the process.

No, all donations made directly to UWM are considered a donation for which an 80G tax exemption receipt is provided. Unless, the corporate is supporting UWM through team participation and opts for the split cheque option, hen an 80G is issued for the applicable retention amount, and the remaining donation is considered as a part of CSR.
For companies who require their contribution to be compliant with their CSR policy, which mandates that contributions have to be made directly to projects or programmes, the company may choose to contribute via the split cheque option while making the contribution for taking a corporate team. Under this, the donation would be in two cheques, one in the name of UWM which cannot be claimed as CSR and the other in the name of the NGO being supported. Both cheques would need to be submitted to UWM at the time of registration.
Note:
As per the circular dated June 18, 2014 issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, one off events such as marathon would not qualify as CSR expenditure for the purposes of Section 135 of Companies Act, 2013. The race fees is a separate component which is charged based on the actual number of individual participants in the event. The same cannot be considered as a part of the donation made by you as it is a cost against a service provided by the event promoter, in this case the bib and other arrangements made for an individual to participate in the race. Therefore, it is charged separately by the event promoter – Procam International Pvt. Ltd. at the time of registration on a separate website.
The corporate is required to fill the registration form available for download here, sign, stamp, attach the donation cheque/s and courier or hand deliver the documents to: Campaigns Team c/o United Way Mumbai, Mumbai Educational Trust, Bandra Reclamation, Bandra (West), Mumbai 400 050, India.

Fundraising involves collecting donations for your supported NGO(s) by tapping into your network of friends, family and colleagues. You can also post your appeal on various social media platforms to further raise awareness and funds for your chosen cause and NGO(s). Fundraising gives you the opportunity to advocate for the cause that you feel passionate about and to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged.
This is an activity where the fundraiser asks their friends, family and colleagues to support their fundraising campaign by donating to a cause close to their heart. Interested donors can visit the fundraisers’ page on UWM’s website and make donations through a secure payment gateway. United Way Mumbai will then transfer the amount the fundraiser has collected to the runner's chosen NGO(s). Online fundraising also makes it possible to reach out to and collect donations for a good cause from people outside of the fundraisers’ residing city/ country.
Yes, you can. One individual fundraiser can choose up to 3 NGO(s) that s/he wants to support. UWM, however, recommends supporting one NGO so that they can maximize the effectiveness of the projects they undertake.
The names of the donors, their email IDs and the amount they have contributed through your online fundraising page are accessible to you when you log into your page.
Yes, all donations of INR 100 and above are eligible for an 80G receipt. The receipt will be emailed upon completion of the transaction. This receipt can be used for income tax purposes. Please bear in mind that even if you have chosen a 35 AC project, you will still be issued an 80G receipt. Foreign donors will be given only receipts and no tax exemption certificate will be provided.
Donors donating through cheque / DD / direct bank transfer to UWM’s account, the 80G will be issued in 15 working days’ time and will be emailed to the email ID provided during the time of donation.
There is no minimum amount that needs to be raised. However, we urge you to reach out to your networks and appeal for funds on behalf of the cause / NGO(s) you chose to support.
Yes, we have prepared a fundraising guidebook with the help of the knowledge as shared by our veteran fundraisers. You can download the ‘How to be a super successful fundraiser’ guidebook from your fundraiser dashboard on UWM website.

Please note the following:
UWM does not accept cash donations. However, if a donor insists on giving funds in cash, when turning in the amount to United Way Mumbai, we request you to issue a consolidated cheque of the entire amount favouring "United Way of Mumbai" mentioning the donor details in the donation report so that UWM can issue the 80G receipts to the respective donors.
It would be best if they can donate through their Indian debit/credit card. Otherwise, they can use their foreign/international credit card to donate on your fundraising page. Otherwise, they can send you cheque/s in favour of United Way of Mumbai and you can further submit it to UWM with the donation report.
Foreign donors will get receipts but will not get tax benefits. Additionally, we will update the amount received in our account after the deduction of banking charges (applicable for foreign cheques / direct bank transfer to UWM account). Please note this may take at least three to four weeks.
If a US donor wants a tax benefit, they have to go through United Way Worldwide. This is recommended only for donations above $250. Kindly do write to us about this donation at tmm@unitedwaymumbai.org & avijit@unitedwaymumbai.orgso that we can track it at our end and update it on your fundraising page once received in UWM’s account.
