About Me

"And still like dust, i will rise" Maya Angelou
I am Rumi Mitra — a cancer survivor, a brand narrative builder, and today, the Director of Communication, Education, Public Awareness & Advocacy (CEPAA) at CanKids…KidsCan.

In 2013, my world changed with a diagnosis that demanded everything — courage, endurance, and an unbreakable will to live. After two years of treatment, I emerged cancer-free. But survival, for me, was not an ending. It was a beginning. It gave me a mission larger than myself: to stand beside every child and family navigating the journey I once walked.

Today, through my work at CanKids, I join hands with doctors, caregivers, survivors, advocates, and dreamers — all united by one belief: no one should face cancer alone. Every child deserves a hand to hold, a voice to champion them, and a system that fights as fiercely as they do.

Running the Tata Mumbai Marathon is my way of carrying their voices forward — louder, farther, stronger. I run for the children who battle with courage beyond their years, for the parents whose hope never wavers, and for the Dream Runners who stand with us in solidarity.

I run because I survived.
I run to honour those still fighting.
I run so that together, we can give every child a chance to win their race against cancer.

Appeal

Did you know that if a child has cancer in the USA, their chances of survival are 80 to 90%. But in India, it is 35%. But it doesn't have to be that way. Founded in 2004 by Poonam Bagai, herself a cancer survivor, CanKidsKidsCan - The National Society For Change For Childhood Cancer In India aims to change that. Creating real and visible impact CanKids has driven access to care for kids with cancer from 29% to 53% by 2025, with a goal of 100% access, 100% financial protection, and 60% survival by 2030.

CanKids partners with hospitals, medical professionals, and state governments to move India towards 100% access2care & higher survival rates for children with cancer. They enable best standards of treatment, care and support across 141 partner centers in 53 cities and 22 states of India. Catering to primarily underprivileged families, CanKids serves the underserved, ensuring avoidance of financial hardship.

Your donation goes towards medical treatment, blood work, nutrition, counseling, education of a child with cancer. Together we can bring light into dark and shine the way for more children with cancer to #surviveandthrive.
