About Me
My name is Zara Mehta, and I study at Hill Spring International School, where I am currently in the 11th grade of the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP). I am running the Tata Mumbai Marathon to raise funds for the Jai Vakeel Foundation, an organisation very close to my heart. Every Friday, I volunteer at Jai Vakeel as part of my CAS programme, and it has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. The Jai Vakeel Foundation supports and empowers neurodivergent individuals, providing them with education, therapy and opportunities to grow and thrive.
Through my time there, I’ve had the privilege of interacting with the students and learning from them in ways I never expected. Each conversation, smile, and shared moment has taught me to look beyond the labels society often places on people. I’ve realised that these students are not defined by their differences—they have the same emotions, dreams, and sense of humour as anyone else.
Volunteering at Jai Vakeel has given me a deeper sense of empathy and responsibility. Running for them in the marathon is my way of giving back to a community that has given me so much. I hope that through this effort, I can raise awareness and funds to help the foundation continue its incredible work in creating a more inclusive and compassionate world.
Appeal
For over 80 years, the Jai Vakeel Foundation has been transforming lives by supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID), many from underserved communities across India. As the country’s largest and oldest non-profit in this field, Jai Vakeel stands for inclusion, dignity, and empowerment. The organisation’s philosophy is rooted in celebrating abilities rather than focusing on limitations—creating pathways for individuals to live fulfilling, independent lives.
Jai Vakeel’s holistic model of care includes healthcare, education, skill development, and family support. From early intervention programs for young children to vocational training and job placements for adults, the foundation ensures that every person receives the tools and opportunities they need to thrive within their families and communities. Each journey is unique, and Jai Vakeel walks alongside every individual at every stage of their development.
However, the need is immense. One in every 50 people in India is affected by an intellectual disability, and 76% of these individuals come from lower-income backgrounds. Many face neglect, abuse, or abandonment due to financial hardship and social stigma. Your support can change that. Every donation helps Jai Vakeel provide education, therapy, and empowerment—giving countless children and adults the chance to live with purpose, pride, and hope.
