Founded in 1944,the Jai Vakeel Foundation (JVF) is one of India's oldest and largest not-for-profit organizations dedicated to serving children and adults with intellectual disability.

It started with a simple dream of a parents Mr & Mrs Hormusjee Vakeel's dream to provide their child Dina who was born with Down Syndrome a place to thrive and be happy in, as no such establishment existed to serve the needs of special children at that time. It started from their home serving a few children to today a two-acre campus in Sewri Mumbai.

At JVF, we believe in the potential of every child to lead a fuller and more inclusive life. Our mission is to integrate our children into family, community, and society to the greatest extent possible. To achieve this, we have developed a holistic model of intervention, which we believe is crucial for the multi-dimensional development of a child with ID. Our interventions include:

We provide holistic services to individuals with special needs; under the below categories: To achieve this, we have developed a holistic model of intervention encompassing:
Education: Three special schools and an Autism Centre for children aged 3–18 years.
Skill Development Centre: Vocational training, a sheltered workshop, and respite care for individuals aged 18–50 years.
Healthcare: Assessments, therapy, medical consultations for students enrolled in education and skill development programs, and family empowerment sessions for parents and caregivers.

Appeal

Individuals with Intellectual Disability have an IQ less than 70 (Normal IQ is 90-100) which significantly impairs intellectual functioning as well as activities of daily living. Intellectual disability (ID), which is a neuro-developmental disorder is characterised by significantly impaired intellectual functioning (such as learning, problem-solving, and judgement) as well as adaptive functioning (activities of daily life such as communication and independent living).

At JVF, we believe in the potential of every individual to lead a fuller and more inclusive life. Our mission is to integrate our students into family, community, and society to the greatest extent possible.

We believe that a comprehensive mix of the above mentioned interventions will enable our children and adults with Intellectual Disability to participate in society with equal opportunities. The definition of participation may vary for each child, but our focus is always on their potential, not their disability. We serve the entire spectrum of ID, from Mild IQ to the most profoundly challenged. Over 70% of our students come from lower socio-economic strata.

Our Annual Reach and Impact:
Operating across three campuses in Mumbai, Deolali, and Talegaon, JVF directly serves 750 individuals annually. Beyond this, we reach over 2,400 children through rural medical camps and collaborate with 453 special schools across Maharashtra through our Disha Abhiyan program, impacting the education of over 18,000 children with ID.

The Annual budgetary requirement to support the above holistic interventions is 27 Crores and funds raised will allow our students to access their basic right of quality healthcare, education and skill development.

Project NameJai Vakeel Foundation’s Skill Development Centre

Project DescriptionAs children with intellectual disabilities (ID) transition into adulthood, their lives become more challenging, especially as their primary caregivers age and struggle to provide continuous support. At this critical stage, support services are essential to improving their quality of life. Upon reaching adulthood, individuals with ID join the Skill Development Centre (SDC).

The Skill Development Centre in Mumbai offers three key programs: Vocational Training Centre, Sheltered Workshop, and Respite Care. These programs provide vocational training, activities of daily living (ADL) training, and livelihood opportunities, empowering adults with ID to engage productively within their families and the wider community.

The funds were utilised to support the operational costs of various programs at Jai Vakeel Foundation’s Skill Development Centre - including the Vocational Training Centre, Sheltered Workshop, Respite Care, and other essential administrative functions. A portion of the funds was also directed towards fundraising efforts, which are critical to ensuring the sustainability and long-term impact of our programs. Effective fundraising not only enables us to continue serving individuals with intellectual disabilities but also helps us expand our reach and deepen our support systems.
