Det Norske Veritas (DNV) in partnership United Way of Mumbai carried out a tree plantation drive on the occasion of World Environment Day, 5th June, 2013 contributing to a better environment. The plantation activity was carried out at Wet Waste Management Centre and Yari Road Association Public Garden in Andheri, West. 25 employees from DNV participated in the drive.
The activity commenced with an introductory tour of the Wet Waste Management Center emphasizing on the process of converting wet waste into manure. United Way of Mumbai has previously collaborated with the Municipal Ward office and a local NGO partner, Centre for Sustainable Development, to run a waste management center in the ward. The waste management center treats Nirmalya (holy waste which consists of flower garlands, fruits, coconuts, spices, honey and camphor offered to Ganesha), converting this biodegradable substance into manure. After the tour, the volunteers conducted a tree plantation drive and planted 15 trees from the Indian species.
