India is home to 1.4 billion people. We have the world's largest youth demographic with 600 million people under the age of 25, with 1.2 million schools serving 250 million students. We have the fourth-largest economy, receive $85+ billion of annual FDI and have enabled 700+ million internet users and 18 billion monthly digital transactions.

But India is also home to 30% of children globally living in extreme poverty, who face challenges such as homelessness, starvation, poor healthcare, unsafe communities, child labour, and ailing schools. 1.1 million children in India don’t attend school. 70% of Grade 5 students cannot do a simple division problem.

This gap between the two India stories is a leadership crisis, and bridging this is both a moral imperative as well as a true measure of our success. By investing in an equitable and high-quality education that empowers every child, regardless of their socio-economic background, we can realise the full potential of our demographic dividend.

Spanning eight cities and over 16 years, Teach For India has held a critical role in the country's educational reform efforts. We find committed people for our two-year Fellowship. We place them in low-income or government schools where they work relentlessly to transform the lives of their students. After the Fellowship, our Alumni work to transform schools and communities, join or start organisations to support education and work within government. Our Alumni also work in careers in research, law, media, government and business and find ways to continue to advocate for educational equity, furthering our purpose: An India free of poverty, and filled with love

Appeal

India today stands at an inflection point; where we go from here depends on our ability to provide equal opportunities for all children to attain an excellent education. The truth is that today, the socio-economic circumstances that a child is born into determines the type of school she attends, the kind of co-curricular opportunities that are available to her, the quality of life outcomes she attains as an adult, and the kinds of opportunities she passes on to her own children. The truth is that today, we are failing the majority of our children.

At Teach For India, we believe that systems change when leaders change. Over the last 16 years, Teach For India has played a significant role in contributing a new generation of leadership to the sector. Teach For India has fueled the education landscape with the talent needed to drive change and is building on proven Student impact across India: graduation rates, reading levels, child safety and more. We are now working to build a movement of 50,000 leaders by 2032, working collectively with love to transform the lives of 1 in 10 low-income children in our regions through an education that unleashes the potential of Self, Others, and India.

We invite you to partner with us on our journey to collectively equip children and educators and build on the impact and growth required for creating an equitable education ecosystem. The support we get will help strengthen and scale Teach For India's cause of empowering children and educators.

Beneficiary DescriptionFellows - The Teach for India Fellowship recruits graduates and working professionals from colleges and organisations across India. Our Fellows come from diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and age groups. ~70% of our Fellows are female and in the current cohort, 33% are under 22 years of age. Children - Teach For India serves children from low-income communities. The children who attend our schools (up to Grade X) are some of the most vulnerable in society and live in urban, low-income, and often volatile communities. Our Students come from households where the parents are daily wage earners, refugees, migrant workers, and so on. The communities are typically below the poverty line, and our students live in conditions that leave them susceptible to disease and natural disasters. Many of our Students are first-generation learners.
