| Project Description | Urja Trust works with young women survivors across India who have faced gender-based violence, homelessness, and discrimination. Since 2014, we have been providing safe shelter, holistic well-being, economic empowerment, and access to civil entitlements, ensuring they can rebuild their lives with dignity. Our intervention focuses on safety, physical and mental healthcare, education, skill development, and reintegration, equipping women with the resources needed for independence. Beyond direct support, we collaborate with government systems and communities to drive systemic change through training, awareness programs, and capacity-building initiatives that promote gender equity. | ||||||

| Project Description | Urja’s outreach team has visited key railway stations and public transit points in Mumbai, to reach out to survivors of violence, and homeless young women. Through the outreach program, we have built rapport with key stakeholders such as the Police, Station workers, and hawkers, who get in contact with survivors of violence directly which allows more young women to be directed towards Urja and access immediate support. Urja has reached out to survivors of gender-based violence this year, protecting them from further violence and exploitation. Urja’s safe and inclusive spaces have facilitated shelter support for 202 young survivors of violence, and the children accompanied with them. Urja’s shelters provide immediate safety and fulfill survival needs, heal from trauma, and access emergency medico-legal support. Urja’s Dadar Shelter has partnered with BMC and received recognition under the NULM (National Urban Livelihood Mission) as a homeless shelter, which has strengthened our capacity to effectively support violence survivors. Recognizing the potential in every individual, Urja facilitates access to education and developmental opportunities for young survivors, to hone their technical and soft skills, bridge the gap between education and skills, and connect them with dignified livelihood for their social, and economic independence. | |||||||||

| Beneficiary Description | The project will work with an extremely neglected and vulnerable population of young survivors of gender based violence which has forced them to become homelessness, between the ages of 18-30 years reaching out from across small towns and villages of India. The target population of the project are young women and LBT youth who have been rendered homeless and extremely neglected by society and the state. At times these young people are accompanied by their children. We also reach out to young women who have been forced to move out of Institutions, with no aftercare facilities for their holistic care. These young survivors belong to marginalized communities who have been historically marginalized, have been denied access to equitable care and resources, education, or livelihoods. Many of these women were forced to drop out due to financial instability, have poor no skills, and are unemployed, or employed in the informal sector such as daily wage laborers, domestic workers etc. | |||||||||
| Impact | 300+ young survivors of gender-based violence have received access to shelter, safety, holistic healthcare, access to economic and developmental opportunities, and holistic wellbeing. | |||||||||

| Beneficiary Description | URJA works with homeless young women and trans persons from marginalised sexual orientation, gender identity, caste, religion in the age group of 18-35 years, who at times are accompanied with their children. “Trans†covers a diversity of gender identities and forms of gender expressions, including transfeminine, transmasculine, genderqueer, gender non-binary, and gender non-conforming people, amongst other identities. We walk along in the journeys of homeless young women who are survivors of systemic oppression, domestic violence, gender and sexual violence, communal violence and sexual violence, and have no access to any resources or government social security benefits as citizens of the country. The homeless young women come to Mumbai from across the country, mostly from rural places, however with no real support from civil society or the system, since they are deemed adults, they land on the streets homeless. | |||||||||
| Impact | Over the 10 years that Urja has been operating, we have reached out to 5000+ young survivors of gender-based violence, facilitating access to safety, shelter, and holistic rehabilitation support. Our holistic interventions for sustainable rehabilitation have resulted in young survivors living independently, having found suitable and dignified employment, while many have chosen to pursue education or their professional aspirations. Social and economic independence has resulted in their access to civil entitlements and equal citizenship rights while experiencing emotional and social security. Thus young survivors of violence are enabled to come out of homelessness, protected from further physical, emotional, and sexual violence, are integrated into a safe environment, and can contribute to the larger economy of the nation. | |||||||||
