Chirag Rural Development Foundation, under its flagship Project Chirag, has been providing solar electrification in dark villages across 11 states since 2010. What began as an endeavour to provide home lighting solutions for rural homes, since 2018 provides Integrated Village Development, where on the pivot of solar power Project Chirag now engages in a 5 Point Rural Transformation, enabling clean and green energy to impact home and social security, education facilitation, health and sanitation and livelihood promotion.
Appeal
Project Chirag is one of India’s largest youth-driven initiatives dedicated to rural transformation through solar energy.
This year at the TMM, we aim to raise funds to light up Anganwadis and government schools in remote parts of Karjat district. Anganwadis are essential early childhood centres where infants and young children receive vaccinations, daily nutritious meals, and foundational learning support. Reliable electricity is critical for lighting kitchens, running fans during hot days, powering water filters, and operating refrigerators for storing vaccines and medicines.
Solar systems ensure these centres are not disrupted by frequent load-shedding, while also reducing dependence on electricity generated from fossil fuels. By powering Anganwadis with clean energy, we help secure healthier, safer, and more supportive environments for rural children.
Each Anganwadi will be equipped with a 40 W off-grid solar system along with electric fittings consisting of two lights and a fan at an approximate cost of INR Rs.24,000 ($340). The solar system will power the anganwadi, digital learning tool (provided by government), kitchen, and bathrooms. Any financial contribution will go towards spreading light and transforming lives of children to ensure a healthier future of India.
