PETA India, based in Mumbai, was launched in January 2000. It operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way, while also educating policymakers and the public about animal abuse and promoting an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect.

PETA India focuses primarily on the areas in which the greatest numbers of animals suffer the most: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the leather trade, and in the entertainment business. PETA India’s investigations, public education efforts, research, animal rescues, legislative work, special events, celebrity involvement, and national media coverage have resulted in countless improvements to the quality of life for animals and have saved countless animals’ lives.

Appeal

Funds raised will support PETA India's Emergency Response Team (ERT) programme. PETA India's trained emergency rescue staff respond to calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In a year, they responds to more than 90,000 calls. The team consists of two veterinarians, six veterinary assistants and seven emergency response coordinators. They operate in Delhi and Mumbai, often reaching animals no other agency will help, and assist animals throughout India through their network. Calls in the last year involved dogs, cats, cows and bullocks, camels, horses, donkeys, monkeys, and other animals. More than 2,600 calls involved abuse that required cruelty investigations and responses.

ImpactThe impact of PETA India’s Emergency Response Team is evident in our recent rescue work. Following our complaint regarding the illegal bird trade at Kabutar Market, authorities found more than 1000 birds confined in grim conditions. Masses of birds lay piled on top of one another – some had perished in overcrowded, filthy cages or cloth bags. The surviving birds were rescued, given health checks and treatment and rehabilitated before being released back into their natural habitats.

In response to the devastating landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, PETA India swiftly mobilised a team to rescue animals in distress. A veterinarian and para-veterinarians trekked through the disaster zone equipped with food, medicine, and rescue equipment to save dogs, cats, chickens, and other animals affected by the landslides.
