Appeal

Road crash fatalities are a grave concern in India, especially in Maharashtra and Gujarat. School travel is central to children’s daily lives, shaping their safety, health, environment, and learning. National frameworks (e.g. Guidelines on School Safety and Security (2021), PM SHRI) highlight the need for safe, supervised transport. Yet broken footpaths, a lack of crossings, and heavy traffic often force families to rely on private vehicles.
The proposed programme will pilot road safety interventions in 15 schools, using a Safe Systems approach, combining behaviour change, infrastructure assessment, and shared responsibility. It will also build orientation modules for school managements and create educational videos and exhibits at public activity centres.
Key components:
1. Participatory Assessment – Students will assess school mobility and safety using eight lesson plans developed by CEE and reviewed by SCERT Maharashtra. Improvements at the school level will be facilitated through the School Safety Committee by the CEE team.
2. Local Protocols for Improvement – Collaboration with municipal departments and traffic police to respond to school submissions and improve signage, crossings, and footpaths.
3. Educational Videos – Covering Safe Systems, walking/cycling school buses, child helmets, restraint systems, and safe cycling, for caregivers, school managers and officials.
