Project Aamhi is a rural waste management initiative working in the Murud taluka of Raigad district, Maharashtra. Since 2022, Aamhi has partnered with local communities to collect, segregate, and process non-biodegradable waste from public spaces and households, while generating dignified livelihoods for rural women and men.

Local safai saathis employed by Aamhi recover plastic, glass, rubber, nylon, metal, and fabric waste from roads, seashores, dumps, and mangroves. This waste is then segregated and channelled for recycling, upcycling, or redistribution. The Potli Project, Aamhi’s in-house upcycling unit, transforms discarded fabric into reusable cloth bags, encouraging sustainable practices and reducing plastic use.

Impact So Far
• 370 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste diverted from landfills, oceans, and open burning
• 42 local livelihoods created, primarily for rural and Adivasi women
• 15 villages currently serviced, with scaling underway to 23 villages
• 7,685 upcycled cloth bags produced under the Potli Project
• EPR partnerships with GPCL, TresVista, and Hexaware Technologies
• Awarded by Raigad Zilla Parishad for excellence in rural waste management

Appeal

Nestled between Pune and Mumbai, Rural Raigad is fast developing due to its strategic location near major ports. However, this growth is shadowed by a glaring oversight – the lack of a comprehensive waste management system. At Aamhi, we're committed to addressing this issue by actively working across 10 villages in Raigad, focusing on removing and recycling plastic waste. Given the low commercial value of the collected waste and the rising costs of collection and segregation, we need your support. It costs us Rupees 33 to manage each kilogram of waste. With a goal to remove 137,000 kgs from our environment, we're aiming to raise 4,500,000 rupees. Without our intervention, this massive amount of waste risks being burnt, dumped in landfills, or discarded into our oceans. Join us in making Raigad a cleaner, greener place. Every contribution makes a difference.
