There is a huge slum population in the city of Mumbai where basic health care is neglected at large. The Women and Children in these communities are double-oppressed in these circumstances as they are further neglected in the society at large.In Mumbai, nearly 76% of the children and 42 % of women in the city are anemic with higher numbers among the slum population. Nearly 50% of the children under five years are underweight (measured in terms of weight-for-age), 40% are stunted (height-for-age) and 21% are wasted (weight-for-age) (Ref. National Family Health Survey-3). Niramaya Health Foundation provides intervention in the slum communities of Rafiq Nagar (close to Shivaji Nagar, Govandi), Jijamata Nagar (Worli), Andheri and other such areas in the city. The Agency provides On-the-Ground services through its various Projects like Anemia Prevention and Control Program (APCP) and Sensitization Program for Adolescents's Reproductive and Sexual Health (SPARSH) where the ground team conducts regular intervention in the community for the women through both Anti-natal and Post-natal Care Services and Health Progress of the children, and regular follow-up on these beneficiaries is conducted. Sensitization and Awareness sessions for Adolescents and also for Younger Children through its SPARSH project also helps in building a progressive mindset on the Younger generations of these communities.
