Two years ago, I went on a school trip to Kerala, and visited an underprivileged school. When I left, I could only think about the contrast between the enthusiasm and ardor of the kids, and the resources they had to channel that enthusiasm. Moving halfway across the world, I was worried about being in a new environment. However, learning music and playing in class and on stage made me a much more confident person. I believe music is something everyone should have a chance to try. Something I love about music is that so much good comes from it, including a boost in academic performance, a boost in self esteem, and cultivation of social skills, all of which I have experienced firsthand. With this experience, I found the value and importance that the music department in my school carries, and I hope that I can bring this to the lives of others. I found out about the Nargis Dutt Memorial Charitable Trust from my friend, and I learned about the model school development project in rural India. I believe that raising funds for a music department would be an effective way to spread the joy of music.
