35% of children growing up in slums do not receive education of any sort. 34,500 children in Mumbai between the age of 5 and 14 are engaged in child labour. 3 out of 5 Indians are unemployable due to poor skills. The stark nature of the statistics shows that we as a nation are not doing enough to help people of the deprived and lower socio-economic backgrounds. In order to usher progress in a country with some of the highest levels of wealth inequality, it is essential that skill building and education is done right from the childhood of underprivileged children. Salaam Bombay Foundation holds several workshops on media, theatre, sport and art in addition to full day school to help enrich the learning process for their students as well as develop skills. Afsar is an example of how Salaam Bombay has impacted the lives of young children. Born into a family living in a graveyard shanty, Afsar worked daily to feed his family at a very young age. When he joined the Salaam Bombay Cricket Academy his life changed as he became proficient in the sport. Today he coaches aspiring cricketers. There are many such Afsars in our city.
