Hello my name is Mukesh Thakur. I am a Blood cancer survivor. I will be running the Tata Mumbai Marathon Dream Run to raise funds to support children with cancer for CanKids KidsCan, The National Society For Change For Childhood Cancer In India. And need your help to achieve the same.
I got my treatment from GTB hospital from Loni Ghaziabad UP. When I was 7 years old I was diagnosed with cancer. At that time there was stigma for cancer and my family’s financial situation was also bad. In my family we have three brothers and 2 sisters, I am the youngest of all.
When I was not well, our neighbour suggested my mother tried everything to get me treated from ‘Jaadu Vaale baba’ to local quacks.
Then my maternal uncle came to visit my home. He explained my mother to get me treated from a good hospital. Then my family took me to GTB hospital child emergency. Where Dr. Sunil Goumber treated me and checked my bone marrow in which I was diagnosed with ALL. When my mother was told about she started crying. Doctor also told us that the treatment will cost 4-5 lakhs rupees and we need 2 unit blood urgently. At that time my uncle and brother helped me. Then my treatment got started. But my mom was still worried about the cost. Then, next day we met Cankids Kidscan NGO where we got help understand that the disease is curable and your child will get well and we will help you. Then my family finally saw a ray of hope.
During treatment I got infection due to which my right hand and leg got paralysed. When I was informed about this I lost all hope and wished to die. When I told my mother, she explained that I’ll get well and shouldn’t be scared. My mother took care of me through her massages and exercise which helped me to get back on my feet again. And my treatment completed in 2 yrs through which I stayed in hospital. Finally I went back home.
When I went back to my home none of my friends came to meet me so I went to them. Btu their families were not inviting rather they had stigma that cancer is infectious. I got depressed because of this. After that when I went back for follow up, I got to meet survivors like me who became my friends.
I joined KCK survivor group through which I spread awareness through street play.
Now I am 22 years old and perfectly fine. I am a cycle lover and dog lover. I cycled from Ghaziabad to Agra because which I won cycling award for cycling for 2000 km.
Now I have my own youtube channel as ‘Yuvraj Thakur Dog Kennel’ and now I have 25 dogs. I am also working in CanKids KidsCan as an Intern in Resource Mobilization team. I aim to spread word that Childhood Cancer is Curable.
I am proud to share that I am participating in the Tata Mumbai Marathon (TMM) in the dream run category with 19 other cancer survivors, like me and our goal extends beyond personal achievements. We are dedicated to raising funds to support children fighting cancer, and this year, I have set a target of a 31000 Rs.
I am reaching out to friends, family, and colleagues, urging them to contribute whatever they can to this cause. Every contribution, no matter how small, will play a crucial role in saving the lives of children battling cancer. Your support is not just a donation it's a step towards saving a child's life.
Join me in this journey, contribute to the cause, and let's collectively work towards a world where quality healthcare is accessible to brave young souls fighting cancer. Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to those in need. Thank you for your support!
