Tata Mumbai Marathon 2023

Greetings to all, I am Utkarsh Khandelwal. I am a lawyer practicing in Delhi and have signed up to be Atul’s buddy to support him in running the CanKids survivors’ marathon. I got in touch with him through this initiative and was moved by his story. It is inspiring how he has recovered and the zeal and vigor that he has. Frankly, I did not know him until recently, I have never met him, but his journey feels like a personal achievement. I want to share with you all a small personal experience. This was 2021, and I was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai for some treatment. Admitted in the ward next to me was a 9-year-old kid going through a stem cell transplant after his cancer treatment, absolutely unaware of what was happening. Unfortunately, the kid could not survive the post-care phase of the procedure. It is just heart-wrenching to see a child go through this ordeal. That 9-year-old friend of mine could not make it due to medical complications, but it would be a personal failure for all of us if a kid does not survive due to a lack of basic resources which are at easy disposal for many of us. Atul here is an example of how children can survive and go on to lead a wonderful life, all they need is a chance. I request you all to be part of this initiative and support Atul who will be running the marathon on 15th January in Mumbai. Together we aim at raising Rs. 2,50,000, which will be utilized to help many such children fight cancer and have the life that they deserve. About Me
My name is Atul Singh Rathod. I’m 18 years old and I’m from Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior and a Retinoblastoma Cancer Survivor. I was born in Delhi and when I was just two years old, I got pneumonia and like any other parent would do, even my mother took me to a government hospital to get me checked. The doctor over there looked at me and told my mother to take me to another big hospital because my eye might have an issue. We were told that the hospital didn’t have a machine to check what the issue was with my eye. So, my mother took me to different hospitals to know what the problem was. When we were going around different hospitals, at that time I got diagnosed with Eye Cancer and one of the doctors recommended that we should go to AIIMS because treating eye cancer was very expensive and we weren’t able to afford the same. My mother took me to AIIMS and got me checked. She faced a lot of problems in the whole process. When our relatives got to know that I have cancer rather than being of any help they started neglecting us and slowly stopped talking to us. For that matter, even my Father left us saying that he doesn’t have any spare money and time to waste on me, and a disease like cancer can never be treated. My mother struggled a lot. I’m alive and well today because of my mother and the doctors. To be honest, if I never had cancer, I don’t feel that my life would have been any different, it’s just that I wouldn’t have to go to the hospital so often, right? I got treated in AIIMS, now it’s been 13-14 years since my treatment got completed. I’m well and my mother is well, all I want is to aware more people about that Childhood Cancer is Curable.
