Tata Mumbai Marathon 2024
HEAL (Help Eradicate Abuse Through Learning) is a Mumbai-based NGO working in the area of child sexual abuse since 2008. It is estimated that nearly 50% of children in India face abuse. Yet, we see HEAL through their awareness and sensitization workshops on child sexual abuse and body safety, which aim to equip adults to recognize and deal with child sexual abuse, as well as help the survivors the best they can; and help the children integrate a sense of body safety and autonomy. The vision thus upheld is to consciously create safe spaces like schools, communities, and homes, that can help in avoiding the horrors that a sexually abusive experience can bring about for children.
We, the children of The Cathedral and John Cannon School are joining HEAL in their fight against child sexual abuse. You too can be a part of our efforts. Your donation, big or small will help us raise the funds for HEAL. Hi I'm Maitri Varaiya, a 14-year-old student from the Cathedral and John Connon School, and I'm on a mission to try and make a big difference with your help!
Let's talk about a really important issue – child sexual abuse. It's a topic we don't often discuss, but it's time to change that. Did you know that according to a 2003 National Institute of Justice research, 3 out of 4 teenagers who have experienced sexual assault were abused by someone they knew well? That's a scary statistic. Every year, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys become victims of child sexual abuse. It's even scarier to think that many cases go unreported. Experts believe that the actual numbers are way higher than what's officially documented.
Now, I'm not someone who's experienced this kind of trauma, but I believe that we should all stand together to support those who have. It's heartbreaking to imagine what they've been through, and it's time for us to take action and help them build a new, fearless life.
Child sexual abuse is not just something that happens in the present moment. It has long-term consequences that can affect a person for their entire life. As Lorraine Nilon wisely said, "Abuse is never contained to a present moment, it lingers across a person's lifetime and has pervasive long-term ramifications."
So, I've started this fundraising campaign, and I want you to join me on this incredible journey. We want to raise funds to support organizations and individuals who are working tirelessly to raise awareness about child sexual abuse. Our goal is to educate both children and adults and give them a voice.
