Over the last few days, we have all seen images of fellow Indians embarking on long, and dangerous journeys to make their way ‘home’. People who have lived for years in our cities, now find it impossible to survive here. The loss of livelihood they have already faced, and the impending joblessness is driving them to a point of desperation. They are now attempting to walk to their villages – hundreds of kilometres away – to save their lives and feed their families. The groups include young children, people who are ailing and lakhs who are simply disillusioned and desperate. The journey they undertake is without adequate food, water, rest or even footwear. There are already reports of people dying along the way and many more who simply will not survive this ordeal. While we have all read about refugee crises in places far away from us, the crisis unfolding now is right before our eyes. We have been trying to find ways in which we can help. We are, thankfully, in a place of great privilege. We have stable jobs, homes and we are in a position to make a difference. Our team has been evaluating emergency response measures. We will be working with other organizations to set up relief camps along main routes, while simultaneously arranging for transport and documentation help so people can get home safely. The camps will provide basic medical facilities, food, and hygiene materials. They will also help with paperwork or transport needed to make the journey less arduous.
