The first time I interacted with kids from Magician Foundation India (MFI) was in the midst of one of their rugby training sessions. They didn’t know who I was, or why I was there but it didn’t take long for them to invite me in to join their circle of exercise. This action, simple as it was, demonstrated to me the fundamental values that drive MFI – inclusion and community. MFI began in 2004 when a few like-minded volunteers started teaching rugby to other children from their slum community. These young volunteers grew up in a community where substance abuse and violence was the norm. They took it upon themselves to try to change the norm, and began with a simple aspiration: to bring a better quality of life through sport to children from low income families living in the slums of Mumbai. While using rugby to develop essential skills such as persistence, leadership, confidence and teamwork, MFI promotes academic learning through Math, English and Computer classes, and ensures that every child is also enrolled in a mainstream school. Of course, a mission so large is only possible when we have people to support us. Just as in rugby, where you can only move forward by passing the ball back, I hope we can help these children move forward in life, by giving back to our society.
