The Central Himalayan Rural Action Group also known as CHIRAG is an NGO located in the pristine hills of the Kumaon Himalayan region. Chirag was founded by Kanai Lal in 1986 to encourage the local community to live in harmony with nature by involving in sustainable practices. Although, initially the organization worked in forestry, livelihood and healthcare, the founder envisaged that it was necessary to pass on the learning to the next generation through means of education.
The CHIRAG school thus embodied this vision and began its operation in 2006. Today the school still fosters a fear free environment for learning and a sense of responsibility towards nature. Teachers encourage children to learn through constant experimentation so as to empower them to become independent life-long learners. The holistic education imparted in the school includes activities such as farming, nature walks, music, art, sports and events in cleanliness and tree plantation to increase community awareness about sustainability and waste management. The school strives to provide a steady foundation right from the early years by inculcating values and ideals of living in harmony with nature, society and with one’s self.
The cost of providing quality education to children at Chirag School is Rs. 28,000 / child / year. The parents pay Rs. 150 / month which covers less than 10 % of the cost.
The school needs to raise Rs. 33.6 lakhs to continue its operations uninterrupted through March 2021.
