My basti is surrounded by many small scale factories. Slum residents mostly work there. We have tried many years for paved road and drinking water facilities. But we know how and where to request for these services. UHRC's methodology helps basti members towards right way forward. I am a member of Nanhe kadam children's group. It is our endeavor through the children-youth program of UHRC, to force the society to get used to gender equality. We basti children become a cohesive force where we all (girls as well as boys) form a support system for each other, ensuring uninterrupted education, playing sports and enjoying other self-development activities. We submit applications for education scholarship, paving slum lanes, garbage cleaning, water supply to relevant departments. UHRC organizes city-level events which give platforms to showcase our skills, talents and overcome stage-fear. UHRC also organises basti and cluster level activities to enhance confidence, knowledge and skills. Women's groups promoted by UHRC help slum families to continue their children’s education, to repay their old high interest debts, to fulfill their regular family based needs. We visit places outside our basti and also outside our city with UHRC's support and learn a lot, perform street plays (nukkad natak) at famous locations in Indore to raise social issues before the general public. I wish to run in Mumbai Marathon to raise funds for UHRC which works with us in a sustained manner.
