What are the Swachh Society Awards?

The ICICI Bank Swachh Society Awards are an inter-society contest to recognise and regard societies who have taken pride in keeping themselves clean, green and safe, in line with the vision of the Honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

United Way Mumbai (UWM) has expertise in the field of cleanliness and water resource and waste management and is currently the evaluator in the Swachh Society Awards, assessing good practices among housing societies across various parameters like:

Who Can Participate?

Swachh Society Awards were open to all residential housing societies registered with the following Municipal Corporations / Municipal Councils under the Mumbai Metropolitan region (MMR):

Greater Mumbai	Thane	Navi Mumbai	Kalyan-Dombivli
Mira-Bhayandar	Vasai-Virar	Bhiwandi-Nizampur	Ulhasnagar
Panvel	Kharghar	Ambernath	Kalamboli

The residential societies of Khopoli, Uran, Kulgaon-Badlapur, Alibag, Pen, Matheran and Karjat, which fall under the Municipal Councils in MMR were not covered by the contest.

Participation Categories

The Awards criteria included exterior wall painting of the building and society premises, installation of Energy Conservation infrastructure, Rainwater Harvesting unit, segregated Waste Dustbins, Mopping Machine, Compost Pit or similar infrastructure related to cleanliness, safety and adoption of clean/green technology.

United Way Mumbai's Role in Swachh Society Awards:

United Way Mumbai is the Community Impact partner of Swachh Society Awards. UWMï¿½s role involves preparing assessment criteria for societies; mobilizing a panel of judges (with eminent background on civic awareness and engagement); screening and undertaking ground audits of the applicants; reporting to the judges and facilitating the objective selection of best societies.
Since November 2007, UWM has been serving as third party auditor for MCGMï¿½s "Clean-Up Mumbai" campaign for the enforcement of "Greater Mumbai Cleanliness and Sanitation Bylaws 2006ï¿½. In our capacity as Third Party Auditors, we work towards eliciting citizensï¿½ participation in various campaigns to promote and maintain cleanliness in public premises. This work is carried out by United Way Mumbai in a voluntary capacity. As the third party auditor, UWM has carried out various initiatives through public-private partnership in order to complement MCGM in its endeavour to keep the city clean and beautiful.

Honouring the Swachh Society Awards Winners

Swachh Society Awards was launched by ICICI Bank in July 2016 as a unique inter-society contest to recognize and reward clean and green residential housing societies in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The objective is to sustain the spirit of the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ movement, as well as recognize and celebrate excellence in cleanliness and safety and adoption of green technology in housing societies.

United Way Mumbai (UWM) has expertise in the field of cleanliness and water resource and waste management, and has been the Community Impact Partner in the Swachh Society Awards, evaluating and assessing good practices among housing societies.

The Swachh Society Awards contest received entries from over 7000 residential societies in MMR in over 50 days in July and August this year. The shortlisted entries were validated through a society visit by United Way Mumbai team.

An eminent jury, comprising Ms. Seema Redkar, former Officer on Special Duty of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai; Ms. Radhika Kaji, Advisory Board member of Cloud Income Properties, entrepreneur and philanthropist and Mr. Saurabh Singh, President, ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, selected the final winners.

The Swachh Society Awards ceremony was held on 2nd December 2016, at ICICI Bank’s corporate office at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis presented the awards to the winners.

The Winners of Swachh Society Awards are as below:

The Top Mega Award – Gold was awarded to Vijaynagar Co-operative Housing Society Limited, Andheri East.
The Second Mega-Award – Silver was awarded to Anand Kores Towers Co-operative Housing Society Limited based in Thane.
The Third Mega Award – Bronze was awarded to Ashok Towers Co-operative Housing Society Limited, Parel.
The winning societies were awarded cash prizes of Rs. 15 lakh, Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2 lakh respectively.
Sealine Co-operative Housing Society Limited in Khar West was presented with the Clean Crusader Innovation Award for implementing green ideas in its society, which shone as a model green society in vicinity of Mumbai Suburbs. The award also included a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh.
Categories Award winners:

Large Society Category Gold was awarded to Mahindra Splendour Co-operative Housing Society Limited, Bhandup and Large Society Category Silver was awarded to a PSU colony B.P.C.L Staff Colony, Trombay.
Medium Society Category Gold was awarded to Mahindra Eminente Co-operative Housing Society Limited, Goregaon and in Medium Society Category Silver was awarded to Tarangan Tower Co-operative Housing Society Limited, Thane.
Small Society Category Gold was awarded to Sealine Co-operative Housing Society Limited, Khar (W) and in Small Society Category Silver was awarded to Mercury Co-operative Housing Society Limited, Airoli.

Each of the recipients of the Categories Awards received a cash prize Rs. 1 lakh for Gold and Rs. 75,000 for Silver, respectively.
The winners will be using these prize money towards building infrastructure for clean, green and safe societies.
Special Appreciation Awards were presented to 18 participant societies in all 3 categories large, medium and small for their initiatives to make their society clean, green and safe society.
