Who We Are
With the mission to empower physically challenged persons to pursue an independent livelihood, Amar Seva Sangam (ASSA) has been carrying out rehabilitation, education, training, and employment of physically challenged through institution-based and village-based initiatives since 1981. Our activities cover four districts of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Virudhunagar in over 900 villages thereby directly catering to over 16,000 persons with disabilities. ASSA was first established in June 1981 under a thatched shed with just handful of rural poor children by its Founder President, a Padma Shri Awardee, Sri S. Ramakrishnan. He is a quadriplegic and a wheelchair user. The organization drew the attention of many philanthropists, artists, corporate companies, trusts, and NGOs, who began supporting its cause. In 1992, CA S. Sankara Raman, also a wheelchair person, diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, joined ASSA, leaving his lucrative practice in Chennai. After his advent, lots of progress could be seen in the overall development of the organization with professional management with increased coverage of areas and included various disabilities. Many bold and innovative programs were introduced which benefited more number of PwDs. We were awarded several prestigious awards from the State and Central Governments and other reputed national/international institutions in recognition of our services.

Raising Funds For
In 2014 we introduced the Early Intervention program for children with developmental delays (CwDs) as a pilot project funded by Grand Challenges Canada (GCC), Toronto. The services are rendered at the homes of CwDs using information technology. This proved to be highly successful. Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives and GCC funded our program to scale up. An international conference held in February 2020 drew global attention. Our objective was to make a difference in the lives of thousands of CwDs to reach their full potential by scaling the impact of our high fidelity, high quality, and cost-effective Enabling Inclusion® Solution through NGOs, Government, and Corporate participation. Through direct implementation and NGO & government partnerships, we work in 5 states across India, with national and international partnerships. We have so far screened 2,30,166 children, 8,355 children received services, 24,397 parents empowered, 12,314 workers trained, 1,80,580 people sensitized, and 2,211 assistive devices prescribed. In 2016 we won the Mobile4Good Award under Health Category and subsequently from 2019 to 2023 we have been honoured with several international awards for our services to CwDs. We are raising funds for this project through Tata Mumbai Marathon 2024 with a target of INR.50,00,000.

Impact | In rural communities, education costs are low, but the standards are high, resulting in an increase in disposable income for families. Completing courses successfully allows students to advance and eventually support themselves independently. Physically challenged children are empowered with higher education, which equips them for independent livelihood. As a result, there has been a decrease in child labor.
Many of the thousands of our students occupy good positions in life in diversified fields as Engineers, Advocates, Teachers, IT professionals, and other Government services.
