Aligned to the following Sustainable Development Goals

Who We Are

The Akanksha Foundation (TAF) was formed in 1991 with a simple idea: to deliver high-quality education to each child, no matter their background. We believe that a holistic education for all children includes excellence in core academic skills, development of socio-emotional and 21st century skills and values, active partnership with parents, and integration with the community. This is the way for them to break the poverty cycle.

Akanksha’s model is a three-way partnership between the government, corporate funding partners, and Akanksha. Our schools are run under PPP (Public Private Partnership) mode where the local government bodies provide necessary infrastructure and materials, and Akanksha takes complete responsibility of hiring and training educators, innovative curriculum and pedagogy while working with the parents. Our corporate partners play a key role in supporting us financially so we can serve the children with zero fees.

Today, with the help of our supporters we are able to impact the lives of nearly 13000 students in our classrooms across 3 cities – Mumbai, Pune & Nagpur through 26 schools. We have more than 4000 alumni, whom we support with financial aid, career counselling and mentorship.

Project DescriptionThe Akanksha Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to build the largest network of innovative schools that empowers children to maximise their potential and that influences systemic reform.
We believe that when we reimagine learning for our students, we can pull their entire families out of poverty and address several allied Sustainable Development Goals.
Our story began 30 years ago with after-school centres. Today, Akanksha supports 14,000 students through the formal-school education program and 4,000 alumni from low-income backgrounds across Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur. Our 26 schools run from kindergarten to grade 10 in partnership with municipal corporations and no fee is charged to the student. Going forward, we seek to expand our network of schools through public-private partnerships, share our effective practices and advocate for school reform for children across India.
We aspire for excellence in our pedagogy that holistically empowers students with life skills and enables them to lift their families out of poverty.

 Developing improved pedagogy (projects that develop new classroom practices/curricula to enhance
    student development)

    Beneficiary GroupChildren
Beneficiary DescriptionStudents come from communities located within a 1 Km radius of each school. Most of the parents have not completed school and work as autorickshaw and tempo drivers, as daily wage earners or as loaders at nearby companies. The community consists of a majority of Hindus, followed by Muslims and other minorities like Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs. A majority of parents are literate but haven’t finished school and therefore most of them are daily wage earners. But they are highly invested in their child’s education. They attend parent teacher classes and parent meetings in spite of busy work schedules.
ImpactClassroom practices adopted give opportunities to children to work with each other, collaborate, brainstorm, organize themselves as groups, work in pairs. These opportunities provide children with various skills, such as, managing their emotions, conflict resolution, problem solving, work in a team, lead a team and decision-making. Instructional practices require for the children to think critically by making connections to themselves and the world around them. This makes what the children learn meaningful, go beyond just literacy and numeracy. Regular and consistent forums such as circle time, advisories, class meetings, empowerment and student council further create structured spaces for our children for their socio emotional development.

    Project NameSchool Network Support

Project DescriptionThe network support team is a central team working with all the schools in the Akanksha network. The team is primarily focused on improving quality of learning in schools and learning outcomes.

The Five Pillars below detail focus areas:

Excellent Educators: Each Akanksha school builds and develops a team of teachers, school leaders, school administrator, and a social worker who collaborate effectively to run the school.

Progressive Pedagogy: Ensuring the methods and practices of teaching are structured to cater to the different ways kids learn. Using technology, project based learning, exposure visits are a few examples.

Accountability to Student Learning: In order to ensure every school team member is accountable to student learning.

Parents as partners: Parents actively engage in the process of their child’s development through programs such as the School Management Committee, parent literacy classes, parent volunteerism and community-wide efforts to address key issues such as women’s empowerment, substance abuse, physical violence and others.

Maximizing Resources: Each school maximises their use of time, money and materials - creatively leveraging government infrastructure, volunteers and a disciplined approach to managing the cost per child annually of an Akanksha School.

Various clubs are offered to children every week. Some of them are theater, needlework, cooking, art, dance, sports, movie, music, folk dance, and folk songs. Through these clubs children explore themselves, develop new hobbies and are also provided with opportunities to work and interact with children.

A structured sports program provides our children with platforms to build on their physical health and development, apart from building skills in various sports.
A strong arts curriculum ensures that our children do not look at art as just a subject to draw and colour.
