Fund Utilization in 2019

Total funds raised in 2019 - INR 466550

Project NameNight School Transformation Program
Amount Utilized (INR)466550
Project DescriptionMasoom has developed a 3-pronged intervention model to provide good quality education – called Night School Transformation Programme, the intervention has been designed so that it can be replicated and implemented in other schools and other states in India. The Night School Transformation Programme includes:
Educational infrastructure building and support – Masoom provides critical educational infrastructure and resources. This includes basic amenities such as nutrition (evening meals), notebooks, textbooks, mobile science labs, library books, computers and audio-visual learning. For the schools that have blind students, we also provide Braille learning tools, Braille textbooks, etc.
Capacity building – Masoom works closely with various stakeholders in the school like the Trustees, Head Masters (HMs), teachers, students, parents, and non-teaching staff. Masoom organizes training sessions and workshops for teachers, parents, and students.
Advocacy – Masoom takes initiatives to bring about policy level changes in favor of Night Schools. Masoom is aiming at raising awareness and advocating amongst the public and key decision-makers about the urgent need of policy-level changes to be made and implemented.

Beneficiary DescriptionMasoom is race, class, gender, ethnicity, religion, politics neutral. Our audience comes from some of the most marginalized sections of Indian society. We work with students who are invisible to society and policymakers alike. Most have had to drop off from day school for reasons beyond their control(financial challenges at home forcing them to work, abusive parents whose greed for tobacco/ alcohol gets the better of them, children with nutritional and other deficiencies unable to cope with school pressures) and have given up on themselves, just like the rest of the world has given up on them. They are in many ways the 'most deprived/ challenged students' of Indian society. A brief background of night schools: The drop out rate among Government day schools is India ranges between 40%-70%. Our organization aims to address this by re-engaging those who've had to drop out from day school, by offering them a night school option. Most night schools are secondary schools which run the 8th, 9th and 10th grades in schools. There are 182 Night Schools in the state of Maharashtra, out of which 120 are in Mumbai. Of the 15,000 youth that studies in Night Schools all over Maharashtra, around 10,000 studies in Mumbai Night Schools run by various Trusts. About 100 Night Schools in Mumbai are being run in BMC (Brihan Municipal Corporation), i.e. Government aided Private schools. Our Organization's target population: Demographic Profile: Students in the age group of 12 -25 years of age are primary beneficiaries of Masoom. Most of them are day school drop-outs and/or migrants who have to work for a living due to dire family financial circumstances. The male students usually work as courier boys, office boys, etc. while the female students mostly work as housemaids. Their salary ranges from INR 6000 ($ 80.00) -- 8000 ($110.00) per month on an average. Most of the students come from urban slums of Mumbai. Psychographic profile: One of the most economically challenged communities of Indian slums, these students' lives are further complicated given that they are first-generation learners, susceptible to anti-social influence, a high family incidence alcohol/drug addiction. Supporting their family by day, and learning during the night, these students do not have the resources to put pressure on the system to demand improvement in their quality of education, infrastructure, and lives.
ImpactThe outcome of our program so far is as follows:
1. Masoom has reached out to more than 20000 direct beneficiaries working with more than 82 Night schools at moment.
2. Attendance percentage has moved up from 34% in 2008–09 to 70% by 2018–19 across all Masoom schools.
3. SSC Pass percentage has moved up from 36% in 2008–09 to 66.08% by 2017–18 with 2 schools on 100% results in 2017-18.
4. So far approximately 400 teachers have been trained through Masoom.
5. Due to Masoom’s intervention, the government has issued GR for providing nutrition to standard 8th students of night schools. Near about 4000 students Class 8 students across the night schools in Maharashtra are getting access to evening meals provided by the government.
6. Through the career cell of Masoom, we have supported more than 1000 students through short term scholarships and around 50 students for long term scholarship.
7. MOU has been signed with the state government of Maharashtra in December 2017 to implement the Shala Siddhi Tool across all the night schools in Maharashtra.
8. Masoom has Signed MOU with Gujarat State under the Vibrant Gujarat Model in 2018-19.
