IMPACT STORIES

HOPE Foundation School, 2015

The HOPE Foundation school in Bangalore started with 30 students, one teacher and a support staff. Most of the students are from the Doddana Nagar slum near the school. Their parents have never had access to quality education. So instead of going to school, boys went to work with their fathers as coolies, mechanics or carpenters, while the girls helped their mothers at home or worked in people's homes. United Way Mumbai teamed up with HOPE Foundation and Allegis to ensure that these children received a well-rounded education with access to computers, a library, sports and extra-curricular activities.

The program has helped 425 children get quality education right from Kindergarten to the 10th grade. The students at the HOPE Foundation school in Tannery Road no longer go to work with their parents. They learn maths, science, history, geography and English, and dream of becoming teachers, writers, doctors, pilots or even astronauts. The Midday Meal program also ensures the children have piping hot and nutritious food at school, while the after school computer literacy program helps young adults and women living nearby to learn computers and find better jobs.
