Cyclone Fani Disaster Response Fund

HSBC is partnering with United Way Mumbai (UWM) to support affected communities in Odisha. The UWM teams are in close contact with local administration, on-ground partners and multi-stakeholder collaborations such as the Inter Agency Group of Odisha for getting timely updates and insights on the needs on- ground. As the impact of the disaster unfolds, some of the immediate requirements on the ground include the following:

Hygiene: Currently, inundation and garbage pose the threat of the spread of diseases and toilets are not functional. Providing hygiene facilities for persons who have been displaced from their homes will help ensure they prevent diseases and live with dignity. A hygiene kit for a family includes napkins (3 packets), washing powder (1 pc), bathing soap (8 pcs), bucket with lids (15 litre) and mug (1 litre) or 10 litre collapsible jerry can (depending on the need of household), disinfectant (100 ml), chlorine tablets (6 strips), towel (large size), toothpaste (2) and toothbrush (5).
The cost of one hygiene kit for a family is INR 850.
*requirement till the end of June 2019.

Safe Drinking Water: Currently, taps are dry and most local water sources are contaminated. We propose to provide technical services to affected families to ensure safe drinking water supply till normal water supply systems are restored. The intervention will include treatment of available water, decontamination of local water sources and water filtration systems where needed.
The cost of servicing one family with safe drinking water for a month is INR 1050.
*requirement till mid-July 2019.

Solar Electrification: The cyclone has affected electric supply across districts and restoring these facilities is expected to take several weeks. In order to help rehabilitate families and assist them in returning to a state of normalcy, it is imperative they have access to electricity. As an interim relief measure, we propose the distribution of solar lights for affected households. A portable solar light offers 200 lumens of light and can be used for 12 hours per charge. It also has the facility for mobile phone charging and comes with two year’s warranty.
The cost of one solar light is INR 1150.
*requirement till the end of June 2019.

Non-Food Items: While food requirements are fulfilled by government agencies and local communities, non-food items – which are often more expensive – are required to help families meet their basic need for safety and shelter until they can be rehabilitated. A non-food item kit for a family includes HDPE tarpaulins (18” x 12”) and 10 metres rope, ground sheet (1), bed sheet (1 double size), mosquito net (1 double size), torch, shelter kit comprising of hammer, nails, ropes, cutting plier & iron strings, cooking utensils (2 pots, 4 plates, 4 cups, 4 spoons).
The cost of one non-food item kit for a family is INR 3200.
*requirement till the end of June 2019.

Healthcare: Those needing medical attention are in larger number than normal and services are restricted. Temporary medical camps will be organized with the objective of providing immediate and basic health services to affected populations and preventing the spread of epidemics. These camps typically cater to skin diseases, stomach ailments and water-borne diseases. Families shall be given free medical consultations and issued basic and important medications on a case to case basis. These will be multi-speciality camps with a conscious focus on trauma and mental health concerns. It is expected that each camp can cater to about 250 patients per day and about 1250 patients over 5 days.
The cost of one health camp (5 days) is INR 5.25 lakh.
*requirement till the end of June 2019.
