About Me

I am a breast cancer surgeon and researcher. After my initial training as a surgeon and surgical oncologist at the KEM Hospital and Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, I learnt about Translational Cancer Research at the University of London. I have been working in the department of breast surgery since 2013 and am currently a professor and surgeon at the Department of Surgical Oncology, practicing breast surgery alone. In last 12 years, I have tried my level best to support women diagnosed with breast cancer not just through my surgeries, but also mentally and emotionally. I have learnt more from my patients than my textbooks. In the battle against cancer, getting diagnosed early is clearly the most important aspect. I hope to see all Indian women aware of the early symptoms and signs of breast cancer. Seeking correct medical care early will not only reduce the treatment severity, but it can also save breasts, prevent mastectomies for majority, and is financially less taxing. We thrive at our hospital to practice state of the art and evidence-based treatment. I also truly believe in the mind-body connection in healing from cancer and its treatment and that "where science finishes, spirituality begins". Help me create a "breast aware" India where early diagnosis can lead to "cure" in >90% of women.

Appeal

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in India and worldwide. The rapid urbanization and changing reproductive behavior are increasing the risk of breast cancer among Indian women. Women are often late in seeking treatment in our country for multiple reasons such as lack of knowledge of early signs of breast cancer, lack of autonomy of decision making, neglect towards one's health, fear of surgery and subsequent treatment. But here is the thing, that breasts can be saved only if the cancer is diagnosed in early stage. However, 40% of our patients still present at a late and advanced stage where removal of the whole breast becomes necessary and treatment lasts for almost a year at times. Reconstruction of the breast is safe and quick, and it can restore the woman's dignity and body image and help in mental, psychological and socio-cultural rehabilitation. Every woman deserves a chance at reconstruction after mastectomy. However, that can be expensive, and a lot of our socio-economically underprivileged women can't afford it. Even insurance companies and Government schemes are unable to support the reconstruction financially. This is where you can make a difference and help us restore the form and dignity of women who are undergoing total breast removal. I have been running 10k since many years. TMM is an epitome of the undaunting spirit of Mumbai which thrives despite of everything. And I hope the same spirit of Mumbai will help me raise funds towards the purpose of "breast reconstruction" as we all collectively run towards one finish line.
