THE NEED

Access to quality primary healthcare remains a critical gap for underserved communities. Public health facilities such as Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and civic hospitals form the backbone of India’s healthcare system, yet many struggle to deliver consistent, high-quality care due to infrastructure and capacity constraints.

United Way Mumbai’s Upgrading Public Health Facilities focuses on upgrading public health facilities to improve service delivery, patient experience, and health outcomesBy combining infrastructure upgrades, equipment support, and capacity building, the programme enables PHCs to function more effectively and respond to evolving healthcare needs.

Strengthening public health systems is essential to ensure equitable access to healthcare. However, many PHCs and public facilities continue to face infrastructure gaps, outdated equipment, and limited operational capacity.

These challenges directly impact the quality and accessibility of care, particularly for low-income communities that rely heavily on public health facilities. Inadequate infrastructure also limits the ability of facilities to respond effectively to disease outbreaks, maternal and child health needs, and preventive healthcare services.

Bridging these gaps is critical to improving healthcare access, service quality, and long-term community health outcomes, especially in underserved and remote geographies.

SOLUTION

United Way Mumbai adopts a systems-strengthening approach to upgrading public health facilities, ensuring that interventions are aligned with Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) and government priorities.

The programme focuses on improving both physical infrastructure and service delivery capacity, enabling PHCs to deliver comprehensive and high-quality healthcare services.

Your support can help improve access to quality primary healthcare for underserved communities. Contributions will enable:

  • Upgradation of PHC infrastructure and medical equipment

  • Establishment of telemedicine facilities

  • Training and capacity building of healthcare workers

  • Community outreach to improve health-seeking behaviour

  • Strengthening of public health systems in underserved geographies

By partnering with United Way Mumbai, organisations can contribute to stronger, more responsive public healthcare systems and improved community health outcomes.

- Each intervention begins with a detailed needs assessment and stakeholder consultation, followed by the development of a customised strengthening plan for each facility.
- Support includes refurbishment of PHC infrastructure, provision of essential medical equipment, and improvements in service delivery systems. Facilities are strengthened to align with IPHS guidelines and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols, ensuring improved quality of care and patient safety.
- Capacity building of healthcare workers is integrated into this process to ensure that infrastructure improvements translate into effective service delivery.
- To address the shortage of specialists in remote and underserved areas, the programme supports the setup of telemedicine facilities within PHCs.
- These centres are equipped with the necessary infrastructure and connectivity to enable remote consultations with qualified doctors and specialists, improving access to quality healthcare without requiring patients to travel long distances for specialised care.
- Improving infrastructure alone is not sufficient without increasing community engagement with healthcare services.
- The programme conducts medical camps and community-based awareness initiatives to encourage early diagnosis, preventive care, and regular utilisation of public health services.
- These efforts strengthen health-seeking behaviour and build community trust in public healthcare systems.
