THE NEED
Access to quality primary healthcare remains a critical gap for underserved communities. Public health facilities such as Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and civic hospitals form the backbone of India’s healthcare system, yet many struggle to deliver consistent, high-quality care due to infrastructure and capacity constraints.
United Way Mumbai’s Upgrading Public Health Facilities focuses on upgrading public health facilities to improve service delivery, patient experience, and health outcomesBy combining infrastructure upgrades, equipment support, and capacity building, the programme enables PHCs to function more effectively and respond to evolving healthcare needs.
Strengthening public health systems is essential to ensure equitable access to healthcare. However, many PHCs and public facilities continue to face infrastructure gaps, outdated equipment, and limited operational capacity.
These challenges directly impact the quality and accessibility of care, particularly for low-income communities that rely heavily on public health facilities. Inadequate infrastructure also limits the ability of facilities to respond effectively to disease outbreaks, maternal and child health needs, and preventive healthcare services.
Bridging these gaps is critical to improving healthcare access, service quality, and long-term community health outcomes, especially in underserved and remote geographies.
SOLUTION
United Way Mumbai adopts a systems-strengthening approach to upgrading public health facilities, ensuring that interventions are aligned with Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) and government priorities.
The programme focuses on improving both physical infrastructure and service delivery capacity, enabling PHCs to deliver comprehensive and high-quality healthcare services.
