THE NEED

India’s demographic dividend presents immense potential, yet millions of young people struggle to access meaningful employment due to gaps between industry requirements and available skills. Preparing youth for the workforce requires training that is practical, market-aligned, and connected to real employment opportunities.

United Way Mumbai’s Skill Development and Livelihoods initiatives equip youth from underserved communities with industry-relevant skills, practical training, and placement support. By working closely with employers, Sector Skill Councils, and training partners, the programme helps create pathways to sustainable livelihoods while supporting industries in accessing skilled talent.

Every year, millions of job seekers enter the Indian labour market, while the number of quality jobs created remains limited. At the same time, nearly half of Indian employers report difficulty filling vacancies due to a shortage of skilled candidates.

This paradox highlights a significant mismatch between the training available to youth and the skills required by industry. While large-scale national initiatives have expanded skill development, many young people still lack access to training that translates into real employment opportunities.

A significant proportion of India’s youth remain outside employment, education, or vocational training, particularly those from economically disadvantaged communities. Without targeted interventions that combine skills training, industry engagement, and placement support, these young people risk being excluded from the formal workforce.

Addressing this challenge requires structured skill development programmes that are closely aligned with labour market needs and supported by strong employer partnerships.

SOLUTION

United Way Mumbai’s approach focuses on developing industry-aligned training programmes that connect youth directly with employment opportunities. By combining market research, employer partnerships, structured training, and post-placement support, the programme helps young people build the skills and confidence needed to secure sustainable livelihoods.

Through collaboration with industry partners, Sector Skill Councils, and training institutions, the initiative ensures that training remains aligned with real workforce needs.

Our key programme interventions include:

Training programmes are designed after assessing local industry demand, job opportunities, and skills gaps. This ensures that the courses offered correspond to sectors with strong employment opportunities.
- United Way Mumbai works closely with Sector Skill Councils and industry representatives to ensure that training content reflects current market requirements.

- These partnerships also strengthen employer engagement and placement opportunities for programme participants.
Training curricula are developed and validated with industry experts, ensuring a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical workplace skills. The curriculum emphasises hands-on training, workplace exposure, and job readiness.
- Dedicated Skill Development Centres are established and equipped to deliver structured training programmes. Youth from underserved communities are enrolled in courses ranging from short-term certificate programmes to longer diploma-level training, depending on sector needs.

- Training also includes soft skills, communication, and professional behaviour, helping participants transition more confidently into the workforce.
- Participants who successfully complete training receive certification from the relevant Sector Skill Council and are supported through job placements with partner employers.

- Post-placement tracking and mentorship help participants adapt to their work environment and sustain employment over time.
