United Way Project Profile

1. CEO for WIT

A team of voluntary women who serve on the board ran WIT from its very inception. However the board realized the need of professional well experienced personnel for handling the operations of WIT as the activities of WIT expanded over the years and needed managerial input and dedicated worker to take charge of the operations.

United Way Mumbai supported WIT to appoint a professional. United Way committed to support the remuneration of Rs 3 lakhs per year for the CEO for a period of 3 years 2003-2005.

The newly appointed professional did a SWOT analysis of WIT to identify its priority areas and dedicated time to work on the same. Key activities undertaken by the CEO in the first year :

  1. Sales and Marketing :
  • Increased export of food preserves and home furnishing
  • Introduced new food retailers
  • Exhibition cum sale and demonstration at a number of key outlets
  • Introduced printing and tie and dye orders from boutique
  • Outstation sales
  1. Awareness / Publicity Drive :
  • Organized a week long sale of book marks to mark International Women's Day at Colleges, outlets of Cafe Coffee Day, Mars Restaurants Pvt Ltd and Shoppers Stop across Mumbai.
  1. Introduced the WIT branding :

Organized the various collaterals required :

  • A documentary film on WIT and its activities,
  • Branding – Designed minimum collaterals - WIT labels, Food Labels, Brochures, Food Danglers, Posters, Book Marks, Donation Coupons, Stickers
  • Redesigned the web site
  1. Enhancing products :
  • Introduction of new products – scarves/ embroidered jacket / coordinated home furnishing
  • Started the Tie and Dye section and Fabric Screen Printing,
  • Introduced new Block printing designs
  • Surveyed alternate, presentable packaging for products
  • Started the Quality control measures
  1. Systems and processes :

          Process of introducing systems have begun in the following           areas

  • Purchase and storing systems
  • Cost control
  • Inventory control
  • Production planning
  • Data Entry for income, expenses, production and stock and department wise.
  • Documentation and implementation of HACCP
  • Reorganizing and streamlining the block printing dept – personnel, designs, colors, coordinated products
  1. Human Resource Development :
  • Conducted session on - self-assessment and motivational sessions
  • Training, refreshers courses in Block printing, Screen printing and Tie & Dye
  • Provided awareness of the various schemes introduced by the government for the benefit of the lower income groups
  • Medical insurance
  • Postal Saving Schemes
  • LIC
  1. Reaching out to the Community :
  • Explored various options where in WIT could associate with other similar organization to be able to reach out to more women and their families.
  • Introduced AIDS awareness programmes for the community
  • Represented WIT at the NGO gatherings

2. Day Care Center

WIT production center is based in Panvel. Many women are employed at the production center as well as the vocational training programmes are conducted at Panvel center wherein women in great number from the Raigad district attend the sessions. WIT realized the need of starting a Day Care Center at their Panvel center with the objective of providing a safe stimulating environment to the poor working women in the areas as well as to increase the participation women for the training programmes.

United Way Mumbai supported WIT to start a Day Care Center. United Way Mumbai helped WIT with a grant of Rs 7.6lakh for a period of 3 years, Rs 5.6lakhs for establishing and running the crèche in the first year and Rs 2 lakhs for running the crèche for subsequent 2 years. WIT renovated the vacant space in their Panvel production center, bought a bus for pick ups for children, appointed professional staff and created awareness of the facility in the neighboring area.

Currently 25 babies of the age group of 7 months to 3 years are enrolled at the center. There is a qualified professional head along with 3 assistants and one cleaner managing the center.
