College Student's Contributes towards
Building Sustainable Communities

H.R. college of commerce & Economics occupies pride of place on Mumbai's academic map. Besides offering range of degree courses and quality education to its students HR College has included social responsibility and development as an integral part of its curriculum and as well demonstrated in practice.

The Dean of HR College has taken an extraordinary step in grooming students as highly responsible citizens by introducing them to social sector in partnership with United Way Mumbai.

Volunteers make up a central function of the United Way operation, without these crucial individuals United Way 's reach would be fairly limited.

United Way Mumbai provides meaningful voluntary opportunities to students with the objective to sensitize and educate the corporate leaders of tomorrow.

Mumbai Marathon

HR College Volunteers backbone of United Way 's Marathon Achievement

United Way Mumbai participated for the first time in the Mumbai Marathon in 2006. 25 students from H.R. College worked with impressive dedication to form the backbone of United Way 's achievements.

The students went out to many of Mumbai's largest corporate organizations and marketed participation in the Marathon for United Way to hundreds of employees.

Their noteworthy efforts meant that 6 corporate teams participated in the Corporate Challenge initiative and almost 250 others ran individually.

The colour and creativity of these students was also brought to prominence on the Marathon day itself as they each ran their respective races decked out in red, acting as cheerleaders and holding the United Way hands with an abundance of energy and zeal.

These commendable efforts by a group of highly motivated youngsters meant that United Way of Mumbai raised an impressive 13.8 lakhs overall. United Way was recognized by the Marathon organizers as being the NGO to raise the 2 nd highest amount of pledges, a true reflection of some excellent work on the part of these exceptional students. NGO Due Diligence

60 students conduct due-diligence on 30 NGOs

United Way Mumbai prides itself in carrying out a fully comprehensive due-diligence analysis of any NGO to which it gives funds.

However trying to service so many needy organizations can take a very long time for an overstretched small NGO.

In September 2005, 60 students from HR College came into United Way's office and divided up the responsibility of conducting the due diligence groundwork for 30 NGOs between themselves.

This meant visiting their respective NGOs and sitting with staff in order to gather together all the necessary information required. Once they had done this work, they came into the United Way office and compiled comprehensive reports which were subsequently used by the United Way team to make decisions about funding for these NGOs.

The entire process took 3 months and at the end these students had put together an information base that is proving to be tantamount to the progress of our relationships with our partner NGOs and their corporate donors. Read More
