Rehabilitating street children and homeless youth who are HIV+ or drug addicts
  

 

SUPPORT (Society Undertaking Poor People's Onus for Rehabilitation) was established in 1985 with the objective to reduce the incidence of drug abuse and create awareness of HIV/AIDS among street children, homeless youths and pavement families through education and care programmes.

Since its inception SUPPORT has successfully rehabilitated over 400 children from drug abuse and have impacted over 1500 children through their programs.

The goals of Support include reintegration of the street populace through economic, social and spiritual development and building up youth movements towards self-reliance.

PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES

Residential Rehabilitation Center for Girls.
  • Residential center for street girls at Kanhephate, Lonavala.
  • Initiated in 2000 to provide safe environment to girls on the streets of Mumbai.
  • Batch of 40 girls many identified HIV positive undergoing rehabilitation.
  • Overall development of girls :
    1. Shelter
    2. Education
    3. Vocational Training (stitching, catering, gardening)
    4. Food & Nutrition
    5. Medical Check-Up
Residential Rehabilitation Center for Boys.
  • Residential rehabilitation center for child addicts below 18 years
  • Started in 1997
  • Home for 100 children
  • Program objective to :
    1. To prevent drug abuse and HIV/AIDS among street children and homeless youth.
    2. To educate street children and prepare them for a decent living in the society.
    3. To re-create a caring and nurturing environment through a residential center for drug abusers.
    4. To facilitate overall development of the child.
  • Activities planned :
    1. Detoxification
    2. Education
    3. Vocational Training
    4. Food & Nutrition
    5. Medical Check –Up
    6. Repatriation
Residential Center for Working Youth
  • Provides vocational training to youths involved in rag picking, shoe polishing, begging on streets.
  • Training courses on screen printing, welding, driving, carpentry etc.
  • Provides employment opportunities to skilled youths in various firms
  • Provides night shelter for working youths.
  • Currently 25 youths are employed and are residing at the night shelter.
Day Care Shelter
  • Started a Day Care Shelter in 1992
  • Day Care Shelter situated in areas where street children are more known to congregate.
  • Two Day Care shelters situated near the main railways stations in Mumbai i.e. VT & Dadar
  • On average 35-40 children visit the Day Care

Vocational Training Center

  • Vocational training in screen printing, handicrafts, carpentry
