1. Where Women Have No Doctor – Distribution of the book in Marathi
Hesperian Foundation, USA has published a book “Where Women Have No Doctor”. The book is a bible to causes, diagnosis and treatment to all ailments common in women. Streehitkarini has adapted the book in Marathi to distribute complimentary copies to all organizations working at grassroot levels all over Maharasthra and also to Streehitkarini Health workers. United Way Mumbai in the Year 2003 supported Streehitkarini with Rs. 1.50 lakh for the publication and distribution of the copies to the NGOs in Maharasthra.
The book was translated in Marathi by a volunteer and published at a very nominal price. The book release function was held on 27th September 2003 attended by well know Gynecologist, social workers, academicians, paediatrician.More than 300 dignitaries from distant parts of Maharasthra attended the function.
The Marathi translation of the book named “Streeyansathi Doctor Nasel Tethe” has been distributed to 278 grassroot level NGOs and health workers in Mumbai & Maharasthra. Another 100 copies are reserved to be distributed to interested NGOs at the grassroot.

81 copies of the book are distributed to Streehitkarini health workers and members.16 copies of the book were given to the dignitaries on the day of the release of the book.
As per the feedback received by Streehitkarini the book is being used to train nurses and aayabais in renowned hospitals out side Mumbai. Many of the NGOs have asked for multiple copies to distribute to their beneficiaries. Streehitkarini is still in the process of documenting the responses and the feedback on a C.D. Once prepared the feedback to the book will be available on the United Way web site.

2. Urban Family Welfare Surgical Unit
The Urban Family Welfare Unit was started in 1981.Many women from the neighboring slums and far fetched places comes for operations like Copper T insertion, Tubal Ligation, MTP. The equipments at the unit are as old as the Unit and needed a replacement.
United Way Mumbai supported Streehitkarini with a grant of Rs1.50 lakh for the replacement as well as up gradation of the Family Welfare Unit.
The Family Surgical Unit now has an Air Conditioner, Water Cooler & Purifier, Vaccum Cleaner, Washing Machine, Refrigerator which were not installed before but much needed for the Unit.
All the surgical apparatus and the instruments, operation table have been replaced.
Over 2500 women will benefit from the well equipped and updated Family Welfare Surgical Unit annually.
