Streehitkarini (SH) is a women's organization working for the integrated development of the women from slums of Dadar – Prabhadevi – Elphinstone Road Worli area since 1964. In a span of 40 years SH has offered social services to women and children covering a population of 1,25,000.
Streehitkarini aims to enable women lead healthy, free and full life. To achieve its aim SH focuses on:
- Developing scientific temper in women through non – formal education
- Providing facilities for Family Welfare activities and Health Care
- Facilities for achieving economic independence by arranging vocational training classes for women and cultivate saving habits in them
Family Welfare Centre |
- Afternoon Medical Clinic: Started in 1964 for medical consultation and treatment to the women of neighboring slums. In 2002 -03, 1965 women and 501 children were beneficiaries.3993 visits of women and 1200 children visits were registered.
- Urban Family Welfare Center: Started in 1981. Runs under the supervision of Directorate of Health Services. Tubal Ligation operation, MTP operation, Copper T insertion, distribution of oral pills and condoms. In 2002-03, 207 operations of tubal ligation, Copper T insertion in 262 women, 332 women were given oral pills, condoms distributed to 336 married couple, 84 women treated for infertility & 322 MTPs were performed.

Pathological Laboratory |

Pathological Laboratory is open for the public for 3 days a week.

In the 2002 - 03, 601 pathological test were performed.

Nutrition Centre & Kinder Garten Classes |

In association with Maharasthra government,SH supplies supplementary nutrition for 300 days in a year for children below 6 years to the slums of the area SH serves.

Supplies nutrition to 10 centers benefiting 200 children and women (lactating and pregnant women) at every centre.
- SH conducts 3 Balwadi classes in its vicinity.

| Health Book Project |
- Marathi Adaptation of the book “Where Women Have No Doctor”. Published by Hesperain Foundation.
- Marathi translation to be distributed free of cost to the grassroot level NGOs with focus on women health in the rural areas of Maharasthra.

| Postal Mahila Pradhan Small Saving Schemes |

The agency of the mentioned scheme was obtained in 1978.

To inculcate the habit of saving among the women.

In financial year 2003, Rs 39,65,355/- were deposited by SH Agency in this scheme.

| Vocational Training |

SH arranges vocational training for women in the community on a regular basis since 1993 – 94.

Vocational Training in beautician, flower making, mehendi, jewellery making, sewing classes are conducted.

| Research & Study Projects |

Mumbai Maternity Diet Study Project : Improving the nutritional status of pregnant women to increase the birth weight of the babies. With the objective to prevent illness like diabetes, hypertension, etc caused later in life due to low birth weight.

| Health Education & Health Workers Training |

Lectures from experts in various subjects concerning health like immunization, importance of nutrition, safe drinking water, regular check –up for pregnant women etc.

Para professionals from the community are given regular health training.
