PETA is the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA, USA was founded in 1980 and PETA India subsequently established in 2000. PETA India operates under the simple principle
- That animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or use for entertainment.
- Educating policymakers and the public about animal abuse.
- Promoting an understanding of the rights of all animals to be treated with respect.
PETA focuses primarily on the areas where the greatest numbers of animals suffer the most for the longest period of time:

- entertainment industry

In collaboration with Indian Council for Leather Exports (CLE), members of Indian government and meat industry are aiming to bring much needed reforms that would alleviate sufferings of animal in trade.

PETA India has filed a case in the Supreme Court versus the Union of India, each state level government and the animal welfare board of India for failure to alleviate the suffering of animals in the nation's leather and meat industry. Grammy Award winner Pt Ravi Shankar is supporting PETA's initiative to file a case.
