“Citigroup is a worldwide partner of United Way and in Mumbai we have spearheaded the United Way charter by being the first company in India to kickstart payroll giving. We have 50 of our employees signed up and are now in process of rolling United Way Payroll Giving on a national basis.”
- Sanjay Nayar, CEO, Citibank (Payroll Giving 2004)

“UPS & United Way share a commitment to build stronger communities and support the efforts of local nonprofits. For more than 2 decades, UPS employees have donated their money and volunteer time to help improve the lives of others. We are a proud United Way partner and support its ongoing efforts”
- Evern Cooper, President of the UPS Foundation and Vice Presidents of UPS Corporate Relations

“I had recently read in Robin Sharma's - "Who will cry when you die?" about a quote "When a baby is born, others rejoice and the baby cries.....one should aim to lead a life whereby when you leave this place, others will cry and you rejoice". When i quoted this during Shibani's presentation to the COE team, I did not realize it then but is sinking in now. This initiative really allowed me the pleasure and privilege of doing something to contribute to our community and to be able to change, in whatever small manner, the way things will work out for some child or some patient..... am impressed everytime i come across such initiatives and the level of commitment and perseverance on this project was overwhelming.”
- Shirish Damle, Head of Global Customer Service, e-Serve

“Personally for me it was an overwhelming experience to be part of the sea of humanity with so much goodwill being exchanged. United Way vikings were really cute. They really cheered us up. They were with us throughout. When they started cheering us on our arrival and started shouting: 'Bombay Dyeing' suddenly the feeling of belongingness to the company shot up.”
- Aruna Jain, CSRP Head, Bombay Dyeing

“DOW India team enjoyed the participation in Mumbai Marathon. More so, it was for the cause. We were impressed by the United Way's level of professionalism and commitment. Looking forward to working with you all in future as well.”
- Rakesh Chitkara, Director Public Affairs, Dow Chemicals (Marathon 2007)

 What is Payroll Giving

Payroll Giving is a simple, organized, tax effective way of investing in the community. The advantage of the program is that it gives an opportunity to all to contribute towards the betterment of the community depending upon their capacity.

Payroll Giving is a completely voluntary program wherein the employees decide the amount, duration, cause and the NGO to whom they wish to contribute their money and time. The employee fills in a pledge form that is usually passed around after a payroll giving presentation and indicates his choice of concern area and preferred NGO and how much money can be deducted from his salary on a monthly basis.

You Can Volunteer Too

Payroll Giving is not just about monetary contribution, it is much more than that. It's about bringing together corporate India 's workforce to unite and work together for development. After monetary contribution, you can also volunteer for several United Way NGO partners related projects and then actually taking responsibility for NGOs and their programs over the long term.

United Way is a Filter to NGO's

United Way acts as a filter to NGOs and helps you eliminate the need to be a part of multiple drives throughout the year by grouping many worthwhile agency appeals and services. If you had to study all the needs of our community and then make the difficult decisions about which nonprofit programs to support with your charitable giving, it would take more time than most people can spare.

The United Way due diligence process allows every employee to make the smartest giving choice from their workplace and know that their charitable giving is addressing the most critical needs, impacting the most lives, and funding the most effective and efficient programs.

And, by using convenient payroll deduction, an employee can distribute his/her total gift by giving a small amount with each paycheck (instead of having to write one large check at one time). That means every time you get a paycheck, you are making a difference in the lives of people in need. It's a great way to feel even better about the work you do.

United Way Is The World's Largest Payroll Giving Network

United Way is synonymous with payroll giving in various parts of the world with a history of payroll giving spanning across nearly 50-100 years. Today globally thousands if not millions of caring, global citizens donate via the United Way payroll giving program.

Aiming For a 10000++ Indian Payroll Pledgers in Year 2007

At United Way Mumbai we feel that community development programs should be of the people for the people by the people. Through payroll giving, United Way Mumbai focuses on raising funds and volunteers to lead community initiatives. Employees who join the payroll giving program will adopt select community action areas and NGO who work in those areas. It is these payroll giving members who will create strategic roadmaps and participate in auditing and tracking of the projects they support.

The first step goal is to generate participation of a minimum of 3000 employees who work within India in the financial year 2005, and who via their payroll pledge de mon strate their support to United Way here in Mumbai. Since United Way has a large global Payroll Giving network across the globe, once we receive support from our local community workforce within India we will then appeal to the Indian workforce across the globe thereby building a bridge wherein both Indians working within India and Indians working outside India through payroll giving are able to partner together in helping build better communities.
