About NGO:

The Bombay Community Public Trust (BCPT) was established in July 1991 as a community foundation for the city of Mumbai. Working in partnership with non-government organizations for the benefit of under -privileged communities, the Trust supports projects in the areas of education, health, services for senior citizens, environment and relief work. Children have constituted a major beneficiary group and a wide range of projects from education - pre-primary, secondary and higher education, vocational training, establishment of libraries and recreational programmes to health, shelter and security are being undertaken each year.

Further, it manages ear-marked funds set-up by corporate and individuals thereby promoting philanthropy.

Fund Usage:

E-Teaching Aid Project : For Vernacular Schools in Maharashtra

The project aims to provide good quality education to children studying in vernacular schools. While learning the subject of English it is found that children lack confidence in speaking English and have poor pronunciation. Teachers also generally do not speak good English.

Covering students of stds 1 to 4, the project provides for the creation of curriculum based 4 CD ROMs for each year. Training material for teachers to facilitate easy use of the DVD also included. The DVDs are being developed jointly by a reputed e-learning company and an education based NGO. Although funds have been raised for the first year of the project period, resources are required for the subsequent three years.

Impact:

A large number of vernacular medium schools, 31 in number presently, which have been equipped with a TV and a DVD player in the classrooms of stabdard I, have started using the interactive and attractive audio-visual aid to teach curriculum based English to their students. The aid is simultaneously instrumental in improving teachers' proficiency in the language.

The results have been encouraging. Students are attentive and they are learning faster. The words learnt by them are being used in conversation with friends and family. Joyful learning of English is now happening in these schools. It is expected to add 50 more schools by the end of this academic year.

The DVD sets will be offered free of cost to any vernacular medium school catering to under-privileged children who are interested in using the aid.
