CHILDLINE 1098 is a national, emergency, free phone outreach service for children in distress, linking them to long term services for their care, protection and rehabilitation. Every day Childline receives thousands of calls from children under vulnerable conditions - children living on the streets, runaway children, missing children, victims of child labour and abuse, differently-abled children, children in institutions or displaced by disaster, mentally or physically challenged children or any child in a difficult situation. A concerned adult can also call on behalf of the children. CHILDLINE is present in 291 cities/districts across the country and has responded to over 27 million calls since its inception. During its first year of operations at Mumbai CHILDLINE received about 6000 calls in the entire year. Today we receive about 11,000 calls daily and service over 4 million calls a year. Our mandate is to visit the child within an hour of the call and to ensure that the child is safe and secure and that the issues faced by the child are addressed.
The CHILDLINE network consists of about 570 local voluntary organizations who partner in the programs as Intervention Partners to resolve problems faced by children
The main program of CHILDLINE India Foundation is to run the CHILDLINE 1098 phone outreach and intervention service for the disadvantaged children. Children in distress can access this service 24x7 by dialing the toll free number 1098 in 291 cities/districts across the country. CHILDLINE logs about 11,000 calls daily from children and concerned individuals across the country. Bulk of the calls are from children living on the streets, runaway children, missing children, victims of child labour and abuse, differently-abled children, children in institutions or displaced by disaster, mentally or physically challenged children or any child in a state of distress. With the help of about 570 local voluntary organizations we ensure that the issues faced by these children are addressed.Therefore we lay special emphasis on improving the 1098 service, a centralized Childline Contact Centre to enhance the quality and standards of call response, expansion to rural spaces to reach more children, quality intervention and rescue operations, training of the social workers and staff, monitoring , evaluation and capacity building of the services to ensure, sustain and enhance the quality of the intervention, outreach and advocacy programs.
CHILDLINE also runs special projects such as support towards critical medical care of disadvantaged children, up-gradation of shelter homes to create a better ambience for children, rescue vans, life skills training program for children addicted to substance abuse, child sexual abuse awareness program for school children and a host of similar activities.
CHILDLINE Delhi received an anonymous call sometime ago informing that 14 children, were abducted by some strangers and were aboard the outbound Seemanchal Express.
The matter was immediately flashed to the GRP and RPS Railway for urgent action. The police confirmed from the motorman regarding the next scheduled stop of the train and accordingly with proper coordination between all concerned, the police apprehended the abductors and rescued the children at Anand Vihar Station. CHILDLINE took the children to GTB hospital for check up and provided temporary shelter for the night.
The next day the children were produced before the Child Welfare Committee. CWC ordered them to be placed at Mukti Ashram and to have their details checked. Accordingly CHILDLINE managed to trace their families and the children were finally restored to their parents.
