Thalassemics India is a registered NGO of thalassemia parents and patients.
It has a membership of more than 1200 members. Our mission is to obtain ''Equal access to quality care for every thalassemic and to spread awareness about thalassemia across the country''.
The Society is very actively involved in getting resources to help underprivileged children suffering from thalassemia major in India and also increase awareness about this deadly genetic blood disorder.
The society was bestowed with an "State Award" from Government of Delhi in 1998.
An award was also given to the Society for doing the best humanitarian work in the country in the year 1999- " George Englezos Award".

Brief Summary of Project where we intend to spend Marathon Donations
Thalassemics India intends to spend the funds received from marathon donations on the care & treatment of underprivileged thalassemia children.
Background:
Thalassemia is the commonest single gene disorder in India .India is a country with high prevalence carrier rate being 3%. There are presently 1 lac thalassemia children in our country. The management alone of these children costs Rs. 1250 crore/year. The cost of treatment for thalassemia major child is approximately Rs.1.25 lakhs/year/ child.
Thalassemics India is actively involved in arranging life saving drugs/equipments and collecting funds from a number of sources for providing standard care treatment to those children who otherwise cannot afford the treatment on their own.
So far, the Society has helped hundreds of such patients by giving them free of cost medicines as & when required.
Project:
- Rs. 6 lakhs * 12 months = Rs.72 lakhs/year - Purchase of life saving equipments i.e. Leucocyte filters, Desferal, Desirox, Asunra, Kelfer & Infusion Pumps.
- Rs. 8 lakhs * 4 Bone Marrow Transplant cases = Rs.32 lakhs/year.
- The total amount required is Rs.1 crore 4 lakh.
Impact:
Child care and medical support.
A thalassemia child by the name of Gaurav Midha age 14 years was looking for financial help to support his BMT treatment. The Society gave him a cheque of Rs. 1 lakh. Gaurav is now an ex-thalassemic.
