Cancer Patient Aid Association was started in 1969 mainly to provide financial assistance to needy cancer patients. However, we soon realized that cancer was unlike any other chronic condition. It required a very composite approach if we were to really fight it. Hence we came up with "total management of cancer" as our mission statement. This included attacking cancer-related concerns with awareness, early diagnosis, patient care and rehabilitation.
For the last 41 years we have spread this message to millions of Indians on what they should be doing to minimize their risk of cancer. We have also given check - ups to a large number of healthy individuals so that if they suffer from this "silent killer", early detection and consequently early treatment is a possibility. Additionally, for those who have been afflicted with cancer, we have provided them with adequate resource throughout their treatment and rehabilitation journey.
Fund Usage:
CPAA supports the treatment of 80 to 100 new patients every month. Apart from continuing with the old patients our support extends to every sphere of the patient & his family needs. Last year we donated over Rs. 2 Crores to the cancer patients. The money raised through the marathon will be used to aid needy cancer patients.
Impact:
Here is a case in keeping with CPAA's philosophy of total management of cancer right from detection to rehabilitation:
A 14 year old boy who stays at Ghatkopar with his parents and three siblings was diagnosed with rhabdosarcoma in 2005 and was treated in Prince Aly Khan hospital. As of now he is in remission, as per his requirements CPAA provides the medical aid. His education and that of his siblings is being supported by us. He comes from a economically lower strata. His mother was given training at a workshop (cooking / baking) & now is a staff at that company & will be getting all the terminal benefits. Today the family is looking forward to the future with optimisim as they are on their own feet & the child is on the road to recovery.
