Founded in 2003, Muktangan is now the sole initiative of the Paragon Charitable Trust. Muktangan has pioneered a model that simultaneously incorporates all aspects of quality education, i.e. 'Whole School Approach'.
This model is run in 7 Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) schools in partnership with the Municipal Corporation. Muktangan trains members from local low-income communities to become effective English-medium teachers. The organization is committed to an inclusive approach and individual attention to every child. The schools are located in Worli and Lower Parel areas (G-South Ward) in Mumbai.
Muktangan is now institutionalizing its teacher education program to create a three year D.Ed course for women from local low-income communities to become accredited English-medium teachers. This program is being developed in accordance with state and national norms including those emphasized by the NCTE and RTE. The program is grounded in Muktangan principles of a child-friendly 'Whole School Approach' including ongoing professional development for teachers.
Fund Usage:
The amount raised through SCMM12 would be spent towards the unsponsored expenses of the Muktangan Educational Project
Impact:
Background: Narisimha belongs to a laborer family. He lives in a tent with his two elder sisters and his parents. His father is a laborer and his mother, a housemaid. Currently his elder sister, Navita is in 1st standard in our school. He joined Muktangan in middle of the month of July 2009. He was given admission in Sapling (Jr.kg.).
Muktangan's Approach:
Just as a bud is tightly closed, Narisimha was socially an introvert. One of the reasons was that he knew only- Telegu and could not communicate in the local language. Therefore it was difficult for him to understand English, Hindi or Marathi that was spoken by his classmates and his teachers. Though his teacher knew Telegu, he took several months to open up with his teacher. He rarely used to participate in the activities. He seldom used to talk to his classmates. His teacher, Sushma, started inviting him to include him in activities. She gave him appreciation for his work and motivated him to participate or communicate his thoughts.
Impact:
The first signs of the bud begining to bloom came in the end of the Sapling year. He started to sing songs in the Opening Circle Time. He reluctantly started participating in group activities. He also made one friend, Raju. He even started to make small projects of his own, like making a building out of the blocks.
Now he is in Young Tree (Sr.kg.). At present, if his Sapling teacher observes him or looks at his work, she always feels awe! Her head goes up with pride and she never fails to mention that Narisimha was "her" child. The reason for this is that Narisimha has bloomed into a flower. The nurturing provided by his sister and his teachers made him into a bright colorful flower. He now participates in activities with full enthusiasm. Everyday he plans new projects. He has now started to use Hindi and English language to communicate. He also has his own group of friends. He never fails to greet teachers while passing them by. He has also started to initiate Opening Circle Time songs
