Transformation of a landfill site into an Urban forest

We at United Way Mumbai develop urban forests using dense plantation techniques like that discovered by Dr. Akira Miyawaki, high density plantation methods etc.

We have planted urban forests at various types of locations including transformation of a landfill site into an Urban forest at Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, an aesthetic urban forest at Sect. 150 Noida, Urban forest along the railway lines at SMV-terminal, Bengaluru, City forest at Indralok, Bhayander (Mumbai), Native forest on hill slopes of SRPF-Goregaon (Mumbai), Native forest on fallow lands at SRPF-Taloja (Mumbai), Urban forest on railway’s reclaimed land at North Lalaguda-Hyderabad etc.

We have planted and are maintaining more than 1,25,000 trees on government lands across 6 cities in 2023-2024. The species planted belong to 100% native and endemic habitat.

There has been an increase in biodiversity and improvement in soil’s physico-chemical components of the site.

United way Mumbai has developed different monitoring and assessment processes to evaluate the impact and growth of the forests, these include:

  1. Updated species list and its cross checking through periodic visits.
  2. Survival rate analysis by regular counting and species level count check.
  3. Scientific analysis of plantation and maintenance methodologies.
  4. Assessment of biodiversity seasonally.
  5. Before and after soil test.
  6. Geo-tagging of trees.
