SCMM'12 Raises Rs 16.07 Crores for 197 NGO's!

A big THANK YOU from United Way of Mumbai on behalf of the 222 charities registered for the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2012 for the phenomenal support received from all the runners and donors who supported a cause.
As Mumbai ran as one on race day with a great display of spirit and solidarity, we at United way of Mumbai felt overwhelmed with the quiet support lent by thousands of donors, fund raisers and corporate groups who supported a cause and a charity close to their heart.
From donations sent in by a 6 year old who donated her piggy bank contents for a charity that helps street children to the anonymous donors who pledged to contribute an amount from their end for every donation raised by the 5 charities they are supporting, SCMM12 had tons of inspiring stories crafted from the selfless gestures of all those who paused to support a non profit organisation, all of whom are working towards improving some aspect of our world. Donations ranged from Rs 10 to Rs 21,00,000. When it comes to charity, no amount is too small, no gesture too insignificant. The wonderful thing was that they choose to donate an amount they were comfortable with to help some less fortunate people in our society.
From a charity perspective, SCMM12 was a grand success not just in the sheer increase of figures reflecting in each category but also in the connect achieved with the city and the indelible association of the event with charitable causes. Many new initiatives were introduced this year to great success. The United Way of Mumbai website was revamped to showcase the work of participating NGO’s better. The easy to use interface encouraged many new individuals to raise funds using their online networks while strengthening the drive of cause committed fund raisers resulting in a 300% increase in online donations.
The entire corporate challenge registrations was conducted through a customized microsite by Procam eliminating all paperwork and giving control to registering corporate on team composition.
Race day was an unforgettable experience with supporters, teams and beneficiaries taking center stage in colourful costumes, signage and concepts sending a strong appeal to the city on the causes they work for.
The introduction of cheering zones for charities was a huge success for the non profits who took a spot. We got an amazing response from the runners and dream run participants who spontaneously broke into a jig along with our cheergirls and volunteers on the street.
This year also saw the entry of our official charity mascot; GAVLU ( Give, Advocate,Volunteer, Live United) our much loved and much hugged supersized green heart shaped mascot who drove the message to run for a ‘cause close to your heart’ along with Gavluni, his female version.
Finally the charity figures say it all. It is the strongest statement the city, its stakeholders, and its supporters worldwide could provide about the caring undercurrent that runs through our society that rises above the cynicism and jadedness to come together for the under privileged.
The race to charity has no finish line, the organizations who received your support would now be enabled to work harder and more effectively with the resources generated for them. There is nothing more enervating for an organization involved in charity work than knowing they have a supporter for their cause and the most wonderful thing to have someone contribute an amount to help you fight for your cause.
